Emily Brontë, the Gothic literary legend, finally gets her close-up in Frances O'Connor's haunting directorial debut,Emma Mackey, who sheds the mystery of the 19th century writer's inner life through her masterful and mercurial performance. And though the period drama intends to illustrate the events that may have inspired Brontë to write, it doesn't do so by relying on the historical record.
This includes a portentous romance with curate William Weightman , but also the intense bonds she shares with her siblings. The four surviving Brontë children, including wayward brother Branwell, struggle to emotionally connect with each other after losing their mother early on in life; their zero to 100 dynamic jumps from playful tenderness to scandalized resentment in mere moments.
