Munster Technological University says its Cork campuses will remain closed tomorrow and Friday due to a significant IT breach and telephone outage which occurred at the weekend

Munster Technological University has said its campuses in Cork will remain closed until next Monday, due to a significant IT breach and telephone outage which occurred at the weekend.MTU is refusing to say if the personal information of students and staff has been compromised.

Next Monday's resumption of activities at its Cork campuses will come more than a week after what the university is describing as a significant IT breach. In a statement this evening, MTU said the decision to keep its Cork campuses closed was taken to allow for"structured and cautious procedures and protocols" to be followed.

"We are working through everything at the moment so, obviously, that's a slow process and it's very cautious and structured. "We do want to keep people up-dated as much as possible, but right now I cannot give you access to a spokesperson," a representative of social marketing company We The People, which has been retained by MTU, told RTÉ News. The university said that outdoor facilities at its Cork campuses will reopen tomorrow in order to facilitate what it described as"pre-arranged, low-risk activities" such as sports training.

MTU said it is continuing to engage actively with the relevant authorities including the National Cyber Security Centre and security partners as their investigations continue."We are currently assessing all appropriate and effective solutions to allow us to return to teaching as normal and reopen our campuses as quickly and safely as possible," the statement said.
