Students at a Utah high school basketball game barked like dogs and yelled racial stereotypes at opposing Asian American and Polynesian players at a game in January, video shows. Parents say school officials have brushed off their concerns.

, the same student section heard his name and saw his skin and taunted him for being Asian American, witnesses said. They called him “dog eater,” a derogatory racial epithet.

The videos don’t include the “rice” comment, but three of the parents reported also hearing that multiple times from where they sat on the opposite bleachers. Nichol Holdaway, another parent of a Hunter High player, said she got the same response from the Roy principal when she emailed him. She had been sitting on the Roy side of the gym that night because there was better access for her mother, who uses a wheelchair. She said she heard clearly what was said.

He said the district will address it, though, if it’s “being perceived as targeting specific students based on their race” and it takes the issues seriously. Some of the parents also showed copies of emails to The Tribune that they’d sent following that match to the Utah High School Activities Association, or UHSAA, which oversees high school sports in the state.

, she said. The Roy students jeeringly stuck out their tongues in a dramatic way and pretended to do the dance with their arms stuck out straight in front of them. She said she also heard the “dog eater” slur hurled last year at both her son and her husband, while he was coaching. To her, nothing about the incidents has felt vague or open to interpretation over whether it’s racism. This year, Halli said, the new coach informed the referees about the mocking.

“The schools are in conversation and are working together on addressing the matter, along with addressing any necessary measures that may need to be taken,” said Jon Oglesby, UHSAA assistant director. Currently, that’s the process set by the organization for dealing with these type of allegations. “School officials are in the process of reviewing any video that was taken, as well as working to identify any students who may have been involved, including potential witnesses,” he said. “Weber School District prohibits and will not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or racism in our schools, and appropriate action will be taken against any student if it is determined they violated our student code of conduct and district policy.

See what unleashing the hate leads to?

Where the hell are the administrators?

What is wrong with Roy High?

Sounds like admin is and has been a problem, maybe they need to be replaced at that school since they obviously aren’t interested in correcting the behavior of their students or attempting to learn of bad behavior.

theutahway according to GovCox SpencerJCox

Shocked! We see why the state voted for both the former president and the reelection of Mike Lee. White 'Christian' Nationalism is both a learned and Tribal behavior and swathes of Utah have it in Spades.

As a former student, I’m disgusted of the action and response. DO better RoyHighSchool.

'the administrator told her that he hadn’t heard anything, but that he’d stand in front of the student section from then on.' Huh. He must have gotten his training from BYU.

Parents are the problem.

Not a single LGBTQ mentioned those cowboy hats? Lord …

Can't wait for all the native buffoons to write this off because 'racism happens everywhere.' Donovan Mitchell was dead right and we all know it.

But it’s kids, so it’s okay. /s

RAciSm iSn’T bEIng TAugHt iN uTAh!

Disgusting behavior.

maklelan Not surprised. It is Utah.

This is ridiculous. No racial slurs were said and barking at everyone isn't racist. School administration was standing right in front of the students and they didn't hear. Neither did the refs, Roy players, fans, etc.

Is this another duke volleyball story or Jussie smollet or is it real this time?

Years ago I called and complained to Centervilles high school when their soccer team repeatedly called Highlands players by racial slurs. It was brushed off by their coach, the principal and I was treated like I was the problem. So gross.

This, unfortunately, is the opinion the nation has of Utahns: Ignorant, provincial, bigots. Thank you, RoyHighSchool, for promoting that stereotype once again. 🙄

Do the new school 'scholarships' count toward bail or jail for the parents of these students? Are these the morals and values taught by schools or racist parents? You get an 'A' for answering parents. utpol

Utah kids being racist is not new. School administrators blatantly lying to protect that racist behavior is different.

BooHoo.....grow some thick skin, it won't be the last time. You gotta let shit go. You'll know when YOU need to act on racism. Now's not the time.

That part of the county has a large white supremacist element.

Good Mormon kids I'm sure.

Very privileged yet low quality human beings on display at Hunter High.

Racism in Davis County schools? Who could have seen this coming besides everyone?

It's really depressing that this could end if the people in charge wanted it to end. They don't.

My daughter is biracial, and she was getting bullied. When I talked to the school they said no kids do that here, and that was it, got so bad I changed schools for her, same thing happened at church to her, we never felt accepted anyway so we no longer go, Utah needs to do better

If I have a kid there's no chance I'm letting them be raised by Utah's public schools, look at how inbred this is

Gang at BYU didn't hear anything, either.

calvinjburke This happens again and again in Utah k-12 and SpencerJCox has done absolutely nothing to meet the problem. Requiring sensitivity training and other measures could be quickly implemented but we can’t protect kids because Cox is scared of being labeled “woke”

Shocked Utah! Shocked! Well… not THAT shocked 🤮

Goddamn it, not again… Can Utah please stop being racist for a little while…

AuntPeggysPrivy This is HORRIBLE

I was bullied everyday in school. For breathing I guess🤷‍♀️. As a parent if your kid is being bullied, doing it or looking away your kid needs help! My daughter went to BYU-Hawaii, she was hurt by ‘you’re not(fill in) you cant participate’, was hurt but helped, loved anyways!…

MAGAts on parade...

Kids just need thicker skin until the crowd starts yelling 'f the mormons'. Do I have that right?

Just the Utah way
