North Carolina’s Republican-controlled Senate has passed a bill requiring teachers to alert parents before calling their child by a different name or pronoun.

North Carolina state Sen. Amy Galey, an Alamance County Republican, speaks to reporters at a news conference in the Legislative Building in Raleigh, N.C., on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023. Galey said she was baffled that her Parents' Bill of Rights, which seeks to bar instruction about sexuality and gender identity in K-4 classrooms, is seen as divisive.

Some parents, teachers and students who testified in committee hearings blasted the bill as an attempt at censorship, likening it to the Florida law that opponents dubbed “.” Others applauded the proposal for keeping what they considered inappropriate topics out of elementary classes. While Senate Democrats criticized the measure during floor debate, they and their House counterparts have offered an alternative bill they say protects both parents and students without putting LGBTQ children at risk.

171 Republican lawmakers join effort to stop student loan forgiveness programThe representatives and senators insist the 'bailout' is executive overreach. Good b/c there’s no such thing as ‘student loan forgiveness’. Pay for your own debt💙🖤💙 Insist? It is overreach because it's illegal. It was just more fake promises by President Dumb Dumb to get a certain class of voters. Taxpayers aren't going to bail out the rich kids, their problem, not ours. I'm not a Republican, but calling it 'forgiveness' is just blatant sappy marketing. If you think taxpayers should pay off some or all of the debts of kids who went to college, fine, but it's not out of forgiveness.
