The incidents were described in a notice sent to the Newport News school district by Diane Toscano, an attorney for teacher Abby Zwerner, informing the district that Zwerner intends to sue. The notice of claim, which was obtained by The Associated Press through a public records request, outlines prior behavioral issues the boy had at Richneck Elementary School and troubling interactions he had with teachers and students.
Two days before the shooting, the boy allegedly “slammed” Zwerner’s cellphone and broke it, according to the claim notice. He was given a one-day suspension, but when he returned to Zwerner’s class the following day, he pulled a 9mm handgun out of his pocket and shot her while she sat at a reading table, the notice says.

lbc360 I worked as a teachers aide for a year~ I clearly remember a big meeting with the superintendent where a coworker asked for combat pay because several special-needs students would bite, pull hair and hit. The superintendent was furious. Student violence is real.

My guess is he was either abused when younger and/or exposed to domestic violence in the home. That, or the bio mom was using substances during the pregnancy and his impulse-control problems are neurologically-based. Regardless, he needs treatment, not incarceration.

The principal’s reaction to all this doesn’t surprise me. I recall our classes **constantly** getting interrupted by little boys and teachers just… didn’t care to ever send them to the principal. Boys are allowed to go nuts.
