Breaking news: The Biden administration on Friday announced more stringent nutrition standards for school meals, reviving efforts to improve the health of millions of public school students in the face of a rise in obesity and other diet-related diseases.

Nutrition standards have remained lax during the pandemic, as school cafeterias struggled with supply-chain crises and labor shortages.

The International Dairy Foods Association has cautioned the USDA about reducing flavored milk options, citing a USDA advisory committee More than 70 percent of students who eat school meals qualify as low-income and are getting meals free or for a reduced price. Low-income children and adolescents are more likely to be obese than their higher income counterparts, according to the CDC.

Childhood obesity rates have tripled in 30 years. By making sure children are provided healthy food options at school, we are decreasing their risk of diet-related diseases like hypertension & diabetes. This is an important step to reduce NCDs and prioritize children's health.

Michelle Obama's rabbit food wasn't cutting it.

Can't wait to see this is evil and wrong from the Republicans

Sounds like fat phobia, fascism, racism and white supremacy to me.

royalmusing Having worked as a lunch lady for 163 days: the lunches have too many calories. An uncrustable pbj had more calories than a Big Mac. I gained 20 lbs eating that crap. Also, they should have just opened the can of peas & dumped it in the garbage bc none of the kids ate the peas.

🎊🎊🎊

Corn lobbyists will begin their attack shortly.

I thought the liberal health department said lifestyle has nothing to do with obesity you wokes need to get your story straight

Message sent - ‘Only gov’t can properly raise your children. With additional ‘common sense’ regulations…’ At what point does gov’t move children to ‘safe places’ to raise them.

All I see in this photo is food waste.

Good way to support US landfills.

This picture shows how the program works in reality. The package of carrots gets thrown away unopened.

“…Trump administration chipped away at those Obama-era rules, arguing that healthier food was of no benefit if kids didn’t like it…agriculture secretary Sonny Perdue cited food waste and nonparticipation as key rationales for the shift, even though…failed to support that…”

And Right Wings grievances in 3….2…..1

And the cost will get passed on to already economically struggling parents. If my govt-sponsored 'meals-on-wheels' cafeteria food is any example, not only is it non-nutritional devitalized 'looks like food', none of it is produced or grown in the US.

Admirable but nothing Will improve until we disassociate ourselves from corporate marketing and their nutritional facts juggling and follow the European or Japanese model for school lunches. And if illegal scum get free lunches why can’t OUR children?

Maybe they should reimplement Michelle Obama's plan that no one wanted to eat, so the kids will go hungry and lose weight.

I remember in 2009 when Michelle Obama said 'hey, maybe the pizza served at school should have whole wheat crust?' And conservatives had an absolute meltdown, telling parents 'it is your right to shovel whatever chemically laced garbage you want down your child's gullet.'

Washington Post gave a place to Hindu hate spreader Rana Ayyub, Where is Hindu journalists in Washington Post, Where is one journalist who can speak for Hindus from India... Where is the voice for Hindus from India in Washington Post? Where is Hindus Freedom of Speech.

What could go wrong.
