“Today was a win for the Indigenous community,” says student trustee Isaiah Shafqat as his motion to change curriculum is approved in late-night vote at public school board.

The Toronto District School Board voted Wednesday night to replace its compulsory Grade 11 English course, which typically explores the classics, with one focused on Indigenous writers.

“It is so important that we continue to take meaningful steps such as this one to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action,” said TDSB chair Rachel Chernos Lin in a statement. “We are simply dedicating one of the four compulsory English credits each and every high school student must have to graduate to an Indigenous education course,” said the Grade 12 student. “We are dedicating one out of 30 courses a student will take in their high school years to Indigenous education.”

Li said he strongly supports increasing Indigenous education and believes it should be compulsory from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12, noting he agreed with the intent of the motion. But that he was “deeply concerned” about the proposal, adding he has not yet seen an in-depth analysis on how these recommendations are supported.

Why does it have to be all or none? There is a reason why the classics are enduring.

This will certainly get Toronto public school students ready for global competition

What a joke

This is woke extremism gone awry. It can only hurt children to remove the greatest literary works of all time from the education path. What they are calling a win for the indigenous is a loss for every child being educated in the Toronto public system. homeschool

Socialist woke ideology coming to a school board near you. Insanity.

Good idea. Should also have Indigenous history courses.

Wow more woke ideology. How many students in Toronto have parents born in Canada. Seriously focus on teaching English, Math and Science not liberal social ideology.

Mandatory? Sorta a modern day twist on Residential schools / At the expense of what, there's only so many hrs in a school day, maybe a school dedicated to indigenous immersion, freedom of choice seems to be something that is becoming a thing of the past

Doug Ford needs to step in here and put an end to this woke shit.

Why so late should be grade school included in history class and later a dedicated course like this in 9 or 10 grade. A lot of people don’t finish high school.

We need to focus on the basics Reading writing and mathematics The sciences The arts Not indigenous studies Waste of time

🤔

I am not normally for mandatory education but in this case it COULD make sense. This will show Canadians that the govt do not give a Flyin F about its citizens and you could be next....IMO. Now more money for Ukraine.

I can’t believe that anyone still supports government controlled eduction service delivery

This is absolutely ridiculous. Why do these leftists feel they can mandate this stuff on students bypassing what parents want. Instead the students are worse off while these handful of trustees pat themselves on the back

We LOVE mandatory now, huh?

I already graduated high school.

Waste of time

This isn't even what the lawyers petition is about. Perhaps the should've spoke to some lawyers about this BEFORE writing a story.
