Top Republican legislators in Kansas have introduced a proposal that would help parents remove their children from public schools.

Funneling public funds toward private schools is not a new idea, but it picked up fresh steam following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic partly because of parents’ concerns over masks and vaccines. The issue also has been driven by opposition to how some schools conduct lessons about topics such as gender, sexuality and race.

Her bill would allow parents to apply to set up a state-sponsored education savings account for each of their children, with the state setting aside the current amount of its base aid per student for public schools. That’s $5,103 for the 2023-24 school year, an amount that would increase as the state boosts its aid. Parents would receive 95% and the state would use the rest to cover administrative costs.

“But with choice, it gives freedom to choose the best and most appropriate education, the best and most appropriate type of environment,” she said. Republicans have legislative supermajorities that would allow them to override a Kelly veto, though GOP leaders have found it difficult to keep Republicans united on education issues.

Money should follow the children. Poor kids in failing schools need this option most of all. It would be reasonable to say that private schools taking vouchers be accredited and auditable

The only people scared of school freedom are slaves to the unions. School choice will force union run schools to compete, and this is good for children

'School Choice' is RW 'code' for taxpayers funding private RELIGIOUS Education: schools which use religion to discriminate. EX: ppl like lgbtq will pay taxes to fund religious schools that'd reject them just for being who they are. in US 2023? thats messed up

School Choice is a lie spread to funnel taxpayer money to churches and corporations.

But I thought homeschooling was the problem

We as taxpayers should have a right to stop funding private for profit charter schools

my son's mother took our son out of school this year in order to home school him... she works a full time job so i don't know how she's supposed to dedicate the time necessary to teach him properly, she's not an educator

People in Kansas better beware this is called dumbing down of America it is the middle class who depend on public education 4 their children now the republicans in Kansas Will allow parents to take their children out of school sure why not They won't be educated.

The gop loves the uneducated, low information voter.

So are they trying to say putting your kid into private school or homeschooling is somehow barred in Kansas? Or are they going for the zero education path? 🙄
