Proposed school choice legislation would let parents use state tax dollars to send their children to schools outside of the Texas public education system. Rural superintendents worry losing even a handful of students could devastate their budgets.

, R-Galveston, families who opt out of public school would receive the average amount of money it costs Texas to educate a child, which sits at about $10,000 a year. Funding for the policy would come from both taxpayers and donations.Paul Bettencourt

In order to win over House Republicans from rural districts, Patrick has said he would “bracket out rural districts” from any school choice bill that goes to the House. He later backtracked on the statement, though, andRural superintendents are concerned that even if only a handful of students leave a district for private schools, the loss of dollars could be devastating.

Although there are no private schools within Newton, Barrow said some students may opt for a homeschool option if any of the proposed legislation becomes law. If that happens, her funding will decrease but her costs will likely stay the same — a sentiment many rural school leaders expressed. If an education savings account bill is passed, demand for alternative education options may rise in rural areas that are currently not served by private schools. Some private schools are already considering expanding by opening satellite campuses, or microschools.

Just one more real life consequence of an electorate who, left largely uninformed by superficial, spotty coverage of the critical issues in our state by the press, made their voting decisions based on irrelevant culture war issues bought & paid for with millions in donations.

Abbott lied? Who would have thought? But so much better to vote for a hateful liar for a 3rd term than someone who hasn't had that kind of access to power for even one term, just to break the pattern of corruption.

If their worst fears come to pass, they will deserve it. They will have gotten what they voted for. But, hey, they really showed the libs. 🤣

They should at least make it so you have to be directly leaving public school to get a voucher, if you’re already in private school there’s no money to be taken for you. Or just not have vouchers and invest in public schools.

It’s not the state’s money. It belongs to the taxpayer.

And yet those rural areas voted for the pro-voucher legislators.

Was a Heritage Actions 'template' law used, ALEC style? They have an agenda of trashing public schools

If rural superintendents provided a product worth buying they would have nothing to worry about. They should have been fired long ago for poor performance.

Public education in Texas

So much better than improving all public schools… /s

The whole point of “vouchers” is to eliminate public education altogether. VanceGinn

It's time to make public schools accountable, this would even the playing field and force them to compete.

It’s not *their* tax dollars. There isn’t tax dollar menu. They want money from the state to be taken away from public schools for their unknown, unregulated version of a “school”. I have no interest in paying for a grift to line the pockets of Abbott’s special interest friends.

And the DEFUND EDUCATION movement has begun.

Separation of church and state does not allow payment to religious schools.

So, do those of us without children get to decide where OUR tax dollars go?

Charter schools are just wealthy slush funds

You can almost smell the (un)intended consequences.

Good riddance.

The rurals keep republicans in office so I guess they’re getting what they voted for.

Excellent. Take your kids out of woke schools. Maybe teachers will actually have to earn their paychecks instead of being the pension-driven leaches they are.

Great our tax dollars going to other states.

But keep voting republican. Republicans haven't done a damn thing about rural hospitals & clinics shutting down, but they'll care if rural schools are affected by school choice.🙄

TexasGOP GovAbbott thank rural Texans by: 1)devastating public school 2)blocking Medicare and eliminating healthcare 3)refusing to install dependable internet paid forby JoeBiden ProjectLincoln statesman DallasDailyNews HoustonChron elpasotimes TheTexasDaily nytimes

It's called Christofascism.

Iowa is already implementing this.

The entire GOPQ is all in on wrecking public schools. Indoctrinating children in GOPQ's version of religion. Killin g critical thinking skills.

Meanwhile, parents worry that sending their child to a district school (based on zip code assignment) that doesn't work for them will devastate their child's future.

That’s what Abbott wants. The staar test is another way he is taking your money and choices away.

School choice is just a lazy rebrand of segregation talking points. If you want to send your kid out of district then move or pay tuition. My property taxes go to help the district I live in - I don’t want them going to subsidize segregation academies for rich white people.

They'll have to start another lottery to pay for the christian schools, I love it.

What happens if a handful (so 5 or less) students decide to move? Or what if class size next year is 5 students smaller due to population trends? This seems like it needs some follow up. May be true, but if so it seems like public schools have massive problems either way.

Once again Abbott proves he doesn't care about (women) or children. Just his bank account.

hcouch22 Elections have consequences.

Considering rural Texans voted overwhelmingly for Abbott in the last election, it never ceases to amaze me how these people will continually vote against their own interests. But I guess guns are more important to them than the education of their children.

Equally important... parents worry that a school that doesn't work for their child will devastate their lives.

No public funds for private schools.

Instead of 'save the budget!,' 'save the kids!'

Public schools are the backbone of American success. Separation of church and state does not allow payment to religious schools.

Wait till you find out about kids from MX crossing every morning to use our system

If they are providing the best education, then they have nothing to worry about.

HiblerDana The irony is that rural voters are the ones electing politicians pushing this anti education agenda. I don’t think they’ll like it when their rural school district succumbs.

Why should my taxes pay for private schools?

If the schools are good no one will leave...'public' schools in Los Angeles are a total failure but still trap kids from leaving them, not fair for the kids. We should try something else now. SchoolChoice

HiblerDana Texas is on track to being a failed state run by the mob, just like Russia

Enjoy capitalism coming to get that public education money. The private schools will increase their tuition the amount of money parents bring from the state and bottom feeders will create crap private schools just for the cash and no oversite. Texas, you get what you vote for.

Republicans are ending public schools from the inside out. Soon, public school boards will vote to dismantle, and the state will defund.

Planoareadems GregAbbott_TX We don’t want vouchers in Texas!!!!

This is also a disaster for students with disabilities, and many of the private schools cannot meet their needs….they go and try it, get further behind, and end up back in public schools needing additional accommodations…. Check out how this has worked in other states….

Quit👏🏼👏🏼voting👏🏼👏🏼for people👏🏼👏🏼who👏🏼👏🏼want to 👏🏼👏🏼 destroy 👏🏼👏🏼public education!

Accountability must be the same. All children receiving public funds should be required to take the same state assessment and pass it. We need to make sure private schools are actually teaching children.

Take from the poor; and give to the rich. It’s the Republican way!

That's awesome! I can't wait for the Muslim and Satanic schools waiting on funding to be included in the voucher system. These christians always come up with such well thought schemes. Education for everyone destroyed. No way the tax base can withstand the storm on the horizon.

And yet it was rural Texans who put the statehouse and governorship back into the hands of Republicans. How long will it take for rural voters figure out why they are losing hospitals and now their schools….

Public funds should not go to private schools period.

If a school gets tax dollars, it ceases being private.

Good. All failing schools should be nervous. All kids deserve good schools.

… and/or their salaries.

Ending public schools is the goal. It has been for decades.

Good. District can stop grooming .

Another bold & stole handout for Abbutts allies & enablers Public funds for private schools who BTW don't accept JUST anybody Now you know when Abbutt says school kids are important he's not talking about yours. $4bil, $1.2mil, millions for 30ft, private schools= $$ TAKEN from Tx

And yet every rural county in Texas voted for the legislators that will make this legislation come to pass…my dad used to call this “an expensive lesson”

Unconstitutional. “Congress shall establish no religion . . .”

the whole point is for the rich to steal back tax dollars denying the poor an education is an acceptable side effect

Just look to Pennsylvania. Charters get funded first, public schools are at the bottom of the hierarchy.

They should be held to the exact same standards as Texas public schools.

Schools create more problems than they solve. Not worth wasting any tax dollars on. Stop funding these child prisons known as public schools!!!
