Despite opposition from teachers, HB215 has passed through the Senate and moves next to the governor for a signature.
People give a thumbs up as they agree with one of the speakers during the Senate Education Committee public comment period about HB215 on Monday, Jan. 23, 2023. The bill, which will set up a voucher system in the state, passed a final vote in the full Utah Senate on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023.Just eight days into the legislative session,
The controversial proposal has been pushed forward with startling speed — and despite outcry and opposition from teachers and nearly every education organization in Utah. With the last OK from the full Senate on a 20-8 vote Thursday, HB215 goes next to Gov. Spencer Cox for a signature. He has already signaled that he will support the measure, though last year he opposed a similar bill with reservations that were not fully addressed in the version that has now passed.
The bill sets up a taxpayer-funded program to grant students “scholarships” to attend a private school or be home-schooled.
If more schools within Utah's mass schooling system were more like Sudbury schools, then I'd believe public schools actually helped address inequality and inculcated democratic living (progressive education). Perhaps funding families will give more kids this opportunity now.
So public money in private hands, cool cool… classic Utah grift incoming.
Step 1 - underfund the public school system Step 2 - demonize the failing, underfunded public school system Step 3 - Divert even more funds away from public schools into private hands. Step 4 - Make a buttload of money while the masses languish in ignorance.
Someone will make a looot of money there!!!
Yup, time to move.
Great idea in a state heavily dependent on public schools where every family has 8 kids…
Can a progressive school be created out of some of that $42 million so they can teach black history and use banned books in their curriculum along with other progressive ideas? If not, why not.
This spells trouble, I fear. Giving certain parents freedom, but none of the concomitant responsibilities. It may be well-meaning, but it’s not a morally strong use of public funds. It gives privilege to the privileged, and cray to the crazy. All funded by you n me.
