Utah lawmakers have given their final approval to a $42 million bill that will create the largest school voucher program in state history.

Despite opposition from teachers, HB215 has passed through the Senate and moves next to the governor for a signature.

People give a thumbs up as they agree with one of the speakers during the Senate Education Committee public comment period about HB215 on Monday, Jan. 23, 2023. The bill, which will set up a voucher system in the state, passed a final vote in the full Utah Senate on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023.Just eight days into the legislative session,

The controversial proposal has been pushed forward with startling speed — and despite outcry and opposition from teachers and nearly every education organization in Utah. With the last OK from the full Senate on a 20-8 vote Thursday, HB215 goes next to Gov. Spencer Cox for a signature. He has already signaled that he will support the measure, though last year he opposed a similar bill with reservations that were not fully addressed in the version that has now passed.

The bill sets up a taxpayer-funded program to grant students “scholarships” to attend a private school or be home-schooled.

If more schools within Utah's mass schooling system were more like Sudbury schools, then I'd believe public schools actually helped address inequality and inculcated democratic living (progressive education). Perhaps funding families will give more kids this opportunity now.

So public money in private hands, cool cool… classic Utah grift incoming.

Step 1 - underfund the public school system Step 2 - demonize the failing, underfunded public school system Step 3 - Divert even more funds away from public schools into private hands. Step 4 - Make a buttload of money while the masses languish in ignorance.

Someone will make a looot of money there!!!

Yup, time to move.

Great idea in a state heavily dependent on public schools where every family has 8 kids…

Can a progressive school be created out of some of that $42 million so they can teach black history and use banned books in their curriculum along with other progressive ideas? If not, why not.

This spells trouble, I fear. Giving certain parents freedom, but none of the concomitant responsibilities. It may be well-meaning, but it’s not a morally strong use of public funds. It gives privilege to the privileged, and cray to the crazy. All funded by you n me.

Why Utah’s governor says he supports the controversial voucher billCox had initially proposed $6,000 salary increases for teachers as part of his recommended budget in December. Immediately, Republican legislative leaders proposed making those pay bumps contingent on approving vouchers. I'm truly surprised they didn't tie teacher's pay raises to a pay raise for the legislature. He's a coward. He knows he doesn't have the spine to stand up to the utleg, so now he's saying this horrific voucher bill is a 'balanced approach.' One disappointment/betrayal after another with Cox. How about we pay teachers more than state legislatures and make state legislature salaries contingent on teacher's salaries. Slime balls.

Iowa and Utah lead states on school choice progress in the new yearAs America celebrates National School Choice Week, two states—Iowa and Utah—have made the first moves this year to empower families with a greater say in how their children are educated. Additionally, the evidence from states with robust school choice policies is debunking opponents’ charges that… please God...let this be the model for American educational system... SchoolChoice is the new SeparateButEqual... Integrated schooling has NEVER been accepted, there has always been a push to keep schools segregated... And the new excuse is this bullshit on CriticalRaceTheory, and anything non-white or 'traditional'. SchoolResegregation
