A recent survey suggests that 17 percent of students at Stanford University have already used the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT on their final exams.

A University spokesperson confirmed that the Board of Judicial Affairs is aware of and monitoring these emerging AI tools, the“Students are expected to complete coursework without unpermitted aid,” Stanford spokesperson Dee Mostofi said. “In most courses, unpermitted aid includes AI tools like ChatGPT.”The anonymous poll, which surveyed 4,497 Stanford student respondents, found that around 17 percent of them admitted to using ChatGPT to help with their fall quarter assignments and exams.

Additionally, a majority of that 17 percent reported using the AI only for brainstorming and outlining. Meanwhile, about five percent reported having submitted written material directly from ChatGPT, with little to no edits. ChatGPT was created by the San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company OpenAI, and officially launched in November.

“The Board on Judicial Affairs has been monitoring these emerging tools and will be discussing how they may relate to the guidelines of our Honor Code,” Mostofi said. The report noted that New York City’s education department has already blocked the website on its networks, citing “concerns about negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content.”

As a current student, this doesn't surprise me. Someone suggested this for an entire essay!!! I refused because the professor/teacher could easily type the same question and get the same answer. MORONS!!! This is the education of America-cheating.

I used a slide rule in 1966

So much for the best and brightest. ChatGPT will save people hundreds of thousands in tuition expenses. Universities are now obsolete. They created the monster that destroyed them. I guess they don't teach Mary Shelley anymore.

Only 17 %?

If AI is so amazing as the 'experts' claim, why not install in into all the illegal immigrants and return them back to their countries so they can make there own counties great again.

Time to take tests in class.

Easy way to fix this: These AI features have been programmed to reject most conservative arguments (fossil fuels, right to life, etc.). Law school exams should have students write from a conservative viewpoint and these apps won’t write anything. Cheating problem solved!

Why not? I guess students will have to actually go to a classroom and take tests on paper!

I'm pretty sure that t-shirts and professors have tools to figure out if someone is using this cheating method, just as there have been tools before this to check papers for plagiarism.

I’m sure the number is considerably higher. Nobody trusts “anonymous” polling… can’t imagine many students actually admitting doing that

Ponce, RI nope, Ponce, PR for example when giving the location of a fake researcher. The lesson most MBA’s will take from this isn’t that their degree is glorified middle school math, but that they can replace half their C-suite salaries with a chatbot
