Nearly 1,000 charter school students from Logan to St. George descended upon the Utah Capitol Rotunda to advocate for school choice as a controversial bill makes its way through the Legislature.

SALT LAKE CITY — Nearly 1,000 charter school students from Logan to St. George descended upon the Utah Capitol Rotunda on Monday to rally and advocate for school choice.

Monday's rally was timed to coincide with National School Choice Week, which will feature more than 26,000 school choice events across all 50 states to raise equal and positive awareness of the traditional public, public charter, public magnet, private, online and home education options available for families, according to a release from the Utah Association of Public Charter Schools.

"The charter system helps us do that. You have choices that your parents have chosen that are making it better for you and your families," Cox said. "I just want you to know how much we love you, how much we love our charter schools and how much we are committed to making sure that we have the best education system in the world right here in Utah."

Gov. Spencer Cox, left, shakes hands with Royce Van Tassell, Utah Association of Public Charter Schools executive director, during a rally to support school choice, hosted by the Utah Association of Public Charter Schools, at the Capitol in Salt Lake City on Monday. Awesome!

What’s this supposed to prove? Making a field trip training kids to be lobbyists?

Two of my grandkids went to charter schools. Because of the cost, they were taken out and sent to public schools. Both of them were far more advanced than the other public students and are now bored with the current curriculum. Yes, pass school choice bill!!

Did the lobbyist pay for the charter school bus and trips or tax dollars? Do the kids even know what they want?

My my two kids cannot graduate from Public school because they have learning disabilities the charter school told us they could graduate and they did for my school school choice is awesome get rid of teacher unions

Thank heavens for charter schools my twins had learning disabilities and the public school system told them they could not graduate From high school so we switch to online charter school and a they graduate from the charter high school. Get rid of teacher unions

As a former student of one of these kinds of “schools”, I couldn’t be more against this. I’m sure there are exceptions but most charter schools are designed to teach alternative truths, which is part of why there is so much division and ignorance in todays world.

Nice they showed up to lobby for the bill. Doesn’t mean it’s a good law. If the “scholarships” are so great, sever them from the teachers pay increase and vote. The combination is to give cover for some votes, and pressure teachers to not lobby against private school subsidies.

Brainwashed kiddos say no to this bill!!

Teacher unions overplayed their hand, lost the trust of parents, and this is only the beginning…cameras in classrooms are next.

This bill will break the bank! With no accountability people will take advantage, it is too tempting at $8000/kid. That's a hell of a trip to Disney! Just sayin

Utah is an open enrollment state, you can go wherever you want…

This makes no sense. Public charter schools already receive public funds. Why are we using students to lobby?

Using kids as political props.

This is assuming the state GOP gives a shit about students

Private school owners using their little profit-centers as props to make even more $$$ and the corrupt utleg eats it right up! (Because they're sharing in the profits.)

Why do the UtahGOP and the GOP in general, hate Public Education? I'll tell you why, because it educates minorities and the less fortunate on an equal basis as Caucasians/white. BradWilsonGOP JStuartAdams Utah UTleg UTed UTpol TakeNote
