The Utah State Board of Education has called a special meeting for Monday at 7 a.m. to vote on whether to support a bill that would create a school choice scholarship, also being called a school voucher, and increase teacher salaries.

SALT LAKE CITY —

"It's an unscheduled meeting," Democratic Utah State Board of Education member Carol Lear said. "I think it is in response to the board wanting to be on the record before the Senate votes."Lear said she can't be certain until the vote happens, but believes a majority of the 15-member board will vote in opposition. Another source close to the board who spoke to KSL NewsRadio anonymously, agreed.

" the local Schools Boards Association, PTA, UEA, all of the school districts, superintendents that we stand with you. This will not be a good thing for local schools."

Raise teacher salaries! Do not do vouchers, whether called scholarships or some other fraud!

Public school is failing our kids! School choice is exactly what we need!

How much is it going to cost?

As a teacher, I'd trade the raise for housing help for teachers in a heartbeat.

Poison pill, lose-lose vote

YES to school choice 🇺🇸

YES! This should ABSOLUTELY be passed!

Actual teacher raises needs to happen. Not this corporate give away bullcrap of 'School Inc' vouchers that has the long term intent of dismantling Public Education and making education exclusive for a select few.

They'll vote no. It's all about power and control with them, not our children.

The vouchers and teacher raises should be separated.

Taxes confiscated for the purpose of educating a child should follow that child to the best educational environment for that unique child. One-size-fits-all government monopoly schools do not and cannot have the flexibility to effectively serve all students.

As if we don’t all know they’re against school choice? They hate losing even just a little bit of control.

At some point Utah is going to lose enough of its public school teachers that these kinds of bills (tying one thing to another) won’t be possible. The law of supply and demand says Utah has to pay more money to keep teachers.

This voucher bill is WAY WORSE than the 2007 attempt that Utah voters soundly rejected by a 2-1 margin and in every county. It will get destroyed in the courts and taxpayers, not the private school lobby, will have to pay the attorney's fees. The 'Utah way' indeed

The legislators are the people of Utah and have voted it’s time tax dollars follow the children so all can have a fair opportunity for the best education they would like. Parent stand strong Schoolchoice

I am for the increase of teachers salaries, I am not for the school choice scholarships!

Why do the UtahGOP and the GOP in general, hate Public Education? I'll tell you why, because it educates minorities and the less fortunate on an equal basis as Caucasians/white. BradWilsonGOP JStuartAdams Utah UTleg UTed UTpol TakeNote

Raises for teachers and school vouchers are two entirely different things and should not be combined into one bill. The legislature is once again trying to shove through something that voters have already turned down (vouchers) by tying it to something that's needed.
