Even in a society accustomed to shootings in schools, this one resisted categorization — a 6-year-old shooting a teacher in Virginia. Part of the answer, one expert says, has to do with how Americans view childhood.

That may be because it sits outside what people are accustomed to. Jennifer Talarico, a psychology professor at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, believes the case hits differently in part because it violates society’s expectations for both school shootings and childhood itself.

Americans are left struggling with a scenario that doesn’t fit into any bucket. But as jarring as that may feel, there’s a danger in trying to force the incident into a familiar framework, says Marsha Levick, chief legal officer and co-founder of the Juvenile Law Center. In an interview last week, Busch said he’s been surprised by the repeated use of “intentional” by Newport News police.

Busch remembers being dumbfounded when notified of the 2000 shooting. “I just couldn’t wrap my head around that,” he said. But he knew immediately he wouldn’t bring any charges.

This isn’t rocket science. It’s the guns.

Yes a certain group of folks definitely have a culture problem. Or it's in their DNA. There's s reason why they're 60% of gun homicides despite being 13% of the population 🤔 We should move them to their areas. They could be almost equal to us, but separated.

No, it's emotionally disturbed and neglectful parents category. Parents don't make use of social services and social services dont reach out/intercede.

They need to charge the parents in this case too. Everyone looks to schools and teachers to teach young people how to act. What about the parents?

California views them as sex objects.

No way it could be a systemic institutional problem with the nations largest employment sector that for sick reasons create conditions that lead to stress, anxiety and mental health disorders in the nations youth, just to produce meat for the corporate and industrial employees.

I think it’s the guns, to be honest

Listen carefully; I don’t want to say this again: The problem is the GUNS!

“Even in a society accustomed to shootings in schools…” WTF ? No, America is not accustomed to school shootings. should be chastised for tweeting such BS!! elonmusk

There’s a whole side of the gun industry that markets guns for kids but sure let’s get philosophical.

Getting hung up on the word 'intentional' is why this is a shit-stupid country where these kinds of things happen.

Or how about we lock guns up better if we have small kids in the home? You can't tell me a fucking 6 year old could unlock a gun that's properly secured.

I’m wondering, though, if this kid has a behavior disorder. Sometimes kids this young are angry and violent. They bully, harass, and hurt. They attack. Is this child one of those? If so, then it’s no wonder that, when he got hold of a gun, he used it to hurt.

No, it’s called parents doing a poor job of securing their weapons.

It’s really not complex. Americans have low self esteem and need guns to feel powerful. Willing to take whatever collateral damage comes as a result

Possibly the most depressingly-framed AP piece I have ever seen

It falls in the same category: the “America has a gun problem” category.

One of life's great mysteries. Guess we'll never know.🤦🏻‍♀️

People from other countries don't think it's complex

how Americans view childhood? I guess it could be a small part. The biggest part, however, should be blindingly obvious and that's how Americans view guns.

Parent appears the issue in this one. Biden lied again about docs (where’s the raid at this point) and Dems incited an insurrection in Atlanta.

let's not galaxy brain this, the guns are the problem

They don’t value childhood. That’s why we lead the world in infant mortality rates

Never give up your weapons America, no matter how the authoritarians try to spin this against gun owners and our 2A…

It really isn’t complex. America has a gun problem. It could be changed, there no will to do so adequately.

How many shootings do you think that kid has seen in videos, tv, movies, etc

The 6 year old and the parent's should ride the lightning.

This incident shouldn’t be the threshold for raising questions

They are kids and need direction and guidance, not 'do what makes you happy' pablum.

If a child does not have the ability to understand the implication of shooting a person with a gun: They don't have the ability to understand the implication of viewing a drag show. Pick a side & be consistent with it. Either they can be exposed to adult expectations, or not.

With so many guns, it was only a matter of time.

It's because a significant minority of Americans have made guns in to a sexual-religious icon and refuse to act rationally or responsibly. This was done deliberately to increase sales

How many times per week is it possible to trot out ‘experts’ and new ‘studies’ before even the simplest of readers conclude that the reportage is absolute bullshit and the reporters are actually propagandists beholden to commercial advertisers and venal stockholders? Clown show.

How Americans view childhood is a bit of a joke, because if it were a Black child who did this, even at 6 they would somehow classify him as a man. When it comes to shootings in the USA, it’s really just a wasteland. There’s no care for children, at all. They’re expendable!

If the teacher had a gun and was trained she could have shot the pistol out of his hand like Wyatt Earp

Oh, Eff Oh.

Live look at the child home:

'..how Americans view childhood.' Yeah too terrified to even read that one champs.

It's more about the lack of common sense gun safety than anything else
