VICE President Sara Duterte, who is also concurrent secretary of education, will unveil her Special Report on Education at the end of January. One of the things she will discuss is the K to 12 program.Until recently, the Philippines, along with some African nations, was one of the places where students spent only 10 years in elementary and high school. The K to 12 program was supposed to bring the Philippine education up to international standards.
The students have to choose from three tracks and multiple strands for specialization — academic, technical-vocational-livelihood, and sports and arts. The purpose being so students can focus on courses and subjects that will help them transition to their college courses, or onto work right after graduation from Grade 12.Like laser beams, these are focused goals. What went wrong? Three years of additional schooling meant additional expenses for the poor.
