San Antonio area high school students get hands-on experience with heavy equipment

Working graveyard and 'things come alive at night'

Audrey Campos, 16, adjusts her helmet during the ACE Mentor Program Construction Day event at RDO Equipment in New Braunfels on Friday. This was the first time in two years the event was held to offer mentoring in the fields of architecture, engineering and construction. The mentors provided job-site training to the students from the San Antonio area.The morning session included 40 students from Highlands High School, School of Science and Technology San Antonio and Sam Houston High School.

The students work in teams and learn aspects of each field. They work on a project they will present at the end of the year for feedback. Projects in and around San Antonio have included work at Hemisfair Park, Woodlawn Lake and Lone Star Brewery. Tessa, a student at SST, started the program in September. She said guidance from a professional put her at ease.
