Parents at the Virginia elementary school where a 6-year-old boy shot a first-grade teacher this month are demanding answers for how the child managed to use the weapon after his backpack was searched.

"If the backpack was searched, they didn't search it right," said Desiree Yvette, whose 6-year-old daughter witnessed the shooting Jan. 6 at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News.Link copiedNEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Parents at the Virginia elementary school where a 6-year-old boy shot a first-grade teacher this month are demanding answers for how the child managed to use the weapon after his“That doesn’t make sense to me.

Further details weren’t made available about who conducted the search, why the gun wasn’t found and whether the child’s clothing was physically examined. “What did they do, just, like, peek in the backpack and say, ‘I don’t see a gun. Go back to class’?” Britton said. “If there was somebody who said that my child brought a weapon, I would want to be notified, and I also would want him to be removed from class until it was straightened out.”

Garcia said he’s upset that the administration didn’t immediately notify parents after the shooting. “Once the news dropped it, that’s when a lot of parents started rushing to the school with mass confusion,” Garcia said. He previously has said that the child’s mother legally bought the 9 mm Taurus firearm used in the shooting and that the boy took the gun from his home. Whether it was properly secured is a key element in the investigation, Drew has said.

shomaristone Don't blame the school, blame the parents, prosecute them. A child doesn't believe a gun is the way to deal with conflict unless he was taught that by his parents.

ItWasACoup Why aren't they wondering WHY their child took a gun to school to kill his teacher in the first place?

It’s no secret that Kevin McCarthy is failing at the job, and is making life harder for families.

We need to focus on the PREVENTION of violence, merely punishing everybody after the fact won’t fix the problem. Why do schools trigger violence? What do they do wrong? THAT needs to be addressed very seriously (aside from issues with parents, gun laws, etc.)

School officials are playing a desperate game of 'CYA' to avoid a lawsuit. The simplest answer (see Occam's Razor) is that they are LYING about a search.

So it appears the parents notified the school that they suspected the kid had taken the gun - the article is very unclear. Otherwise, why would you search a kid’s backpack? If so, the school may be no less responsible than the parents, maybe even more.

They search backpacks in 1st grade? Wow, that's just unsettling!

like the principal handed the child the gun?🙄the main ones squawking probably voted for Youngkin. NoLivesMatter it's the guns. NRAownsGOP

Question is why did he have access to a gun If he brought it from home the parents need to be held accountable

Where did he get the gun...?

If Cops and 6 year old’s parents had been notified at first report of gun, probably different outcome.

Let's not forget to hold parents accountable.

How about how he managed to get it from his home? Let’s start there.

The fact that you have to search 6 year olds back packs speaks for itself.

A school administrator was told that a student had a gun on campus and the police were not notified? Lots of unanswered questions.

They asking the wrong questions, why is a 6yr old having a gun in the first place.

School officials are clearly lying. 😨

NBC News’ quiet removal of ‘Weinstein’s best PR person’ Noah Oppenheim raises industry eyebrows

Posted repeatedly. The REAL story here is why have no adults been arrested and charged in this case?

So the problem is not the fact the 6 year had a gun? But the fact that the school didn't find it before he could use it? Shit man the USA is fucked!

When did they search his backpack? Before or after entering the classroom? Did they check his coat? Call police/parents so he could be checked to see if it was being carried on his body? The school dropped the ball but ultimately it is his parents(s) fault for him having it.

Spoiler alert: it’s America. They have all the answers they need.

It's the school's fault then...🤔. A gun was made available to him and he knew how to use it..

Looks to me like they didnt search good

This teacher who was shot still made sure her class was safe before getting medical attention. Now parents are complaining that she didn’t check the book bag correctly.

When I was substituting, we were just looking for any notes from a parent, library books and to see if they brought lunch. Not going through each bag, searching for weapons.

I would hope so.

Another question: Why are his parents still not in custody? 😨

The African American child stole the gun from his mom and hid it in his belt. It's not rocket science.

Talk to HIS parents. Why hasn’t this been done instead of blaming a teacher and school administrators?

I assume they are equally outraged he managed to get their gun into his backpack?

他只是一个小男孩,甚至不知道死亡的可怕,又怎么会明白枪械的力量呢,根本还是控枪的激进与枪械危害教育发展的不平衡。

Hidden on his person?

Backpack clearly wasn't searched well Failure on almost every front Kid shouldn't have had the gun Security should have found the gun I hope the teacher is gonna be ok

Opinion | In some Virginia schools, ‘equity’ seems to mean hiding achievementLt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears deeply values education. No wonder she's upset that students weren't told they'd received National Merit Commendation awards. Equity means communism. They teach these kids to embrace their feelings and act on them instead of showing them the reward for hard work and self worth. This causes school shooters and mental illness. Needs to stop.
