A public school trustee is calling on Ottawa's largest school board to hire a Jewish Equity Coach to help educate staff and students about antisemitism.
Kaplan-Myrth adds Jewish students and families have "shared their traumatic experiences and have appealed to the Board seeking stronger support in protecting and promoting Jewish student well-being."the board was not doing enough to respond to rising hate toward Jewish students and staff. When they entered, they witnessed a large swastika displayed on the floor and one student made a Nazi salute. Police said Tuesday that one student created and displayed a hate symbol in the school and another used antisemitic language and gestures.

As a teacher, I would say that I think this IS important. Especially around equity work, whether we are self-aware enough to admit it, we all see things through our own lens of culture and experience. The situation around Israel/Palestine especially complicates things.

The OCDSB is a non denominational board and this should be maintained in the interest of EDI. The province should focus on eliminating segregated school boards. Promoting one religion over another in the school system does not support principles of EDI.
Last week my daughter and her friends were harassed by kids from another school and called “n” and “f”. We need more than one type of hatred addressed.
