Westwood Elementary School instructor Elizabeth Henning joins students Deeksha Shakar, Milan Portelance and Robert McRae, who could be the first to use the school's book-vending machine later this year. From candy to soda, vending machines have always doled out flavor, but in recent years they've been helping elementary schools by providing books.
When the machine begins operating, students like Robert can deposit a chip or token and make their selection just like they would a bag of chips, and a book will drop down for them to keep. "One of our ladies who takes pictures, she was already in the classroom taking pictures of kids doing stuff, which I thought was a little unusual," Henning said."I'm thinking maybe they're updating their photos, and then it clicked as came closer. Oh my God, this is for me! It was awesome."National Assessment of Educational Progress
