Gov. Tom Wolf announced funding on Thursday for a short-lived $5 million scholarship program open to state employees and their dependents to attend a Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education university. The one-time federal funding used to provide scholarships must be committed by December 2024. File/Dan Gleiter | dgleiter@pennlive.comGov. Tom Wolf has been a strong advocate for funding for Pennsylvania’s state-owned universities and as his administration winds to a close on Jan.
Funding for the scholarships comes from federal American Rescue Plan Act money that Wolf gave to the foundation to administer the program. It is one-time funding that must be allocated by December 2024. Any unspent funds must be returned to the federal government. Wolf has been a strong supporter of the transforming State System of Higher Education which is focused on bringing its costs in line with revenues, making its tuition affordable to low- and middle-income students, and producing graduates for in-demand jobs in this state.
“We are proud to have a strong partnership with the commonwealth, and we applaud Governor Wolf’s $5 million investment in scholarships for state employees and their dependents at State System universities,” said system board chairwoman Cindy Shapira. “The State System has frozen tuition for four consecutive years and increased student financial aid in our commitment to provide high-quality education at the lowest possible cost to students.
