The Nigerian education sector has suffered from incessant strikes fuelled by what the Academic Staff Union of Universities has called failed promises, poor facilities and infrastructure maintenance, budget leakage and many more.

As part of efforts geared towards addressing funding challenges in the country’s tertiary institutions of learning, the National Assembly recently passed the Student Loan Bill, which has faced much criticism, into law.reports the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, cautioned against the condemnation of the Student Loan Bank being proposed through the Student Loan Bill.

He was reacting to ASUU President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, who claimed university lecturers would not support the proposed Student Loan Bank because the previous attempt failed. According to the speaker, as contained in the bill, the beneficiary is also expected to have a civil servant as a guarantor who is at least 12 years in service or a lawyer with at least 10 years of experience.

“The bill on the educational loan is a step in the right direction and equally a step towards a major decision. If I can read the mind of the legislators, what they are trying to do is to put machinery in place for student education and the next step will be that universities should be charging school fees.

More so, Director, Research and Strategy at Chapel Hill Denham, Tajudeen Ibrahim, explained, “I think the government is incapacitated but if we take a long-term overview, then the government has the capacity to fulfil its promise to ASUU. What the government needs are stronger revenue generation and larger allocation to the education sector, partially tertiary education.

Americans are complaining about students loan now you want Nigerians to buy this failed ideology... Most of Nigerian politicians enjoyed free education scheme... This is pathetic we shouldn't buy into this ideology it will kill us and increase the debt profile!

Another strategy for loothing from the little left in the treasure, now not for themselves but for their untrained and uncultured children. Executhieves Legisloothing Judisharing, FGN

Obubuyeye

Students will not teach themselves but will be taught, you made empty promises.

It's still the senators, Ministers, top politicians that will still access the Loan for their children and ensure the CBN forfeits the loan. Greedy men in FGN.

THAT WAS BAD IDEA, LET THE GOVERNMENT DO THE NEEDFUL.

A country without citizen database shouldn’t start things like this. Make federal skuls affordable, fund infrastructures, employ enough lecturers and pay em well. This is stupid and irresponsible at this point when lecturers need to strike before our skuls get federal fundings.

Shut up. Nothing makes sense about APC. Look underneath this bill, APC have alot of cashout to make. I don't trust these people at all
