The 'Banished Words' list for 2022 has been released. GOAT, quiet quitting, and amazing made the list. It is what it is. (That made the list as well.)

. Over the years, LSSU has received tens of thousands of nominations for its annual list.

Frequently targeted are of-the-moment phrases like"in these uncertain times" ,"information superhighway" and"filmed before a live studio audience" .Joining them are common linguistic bugaboos – frequently misused words like"impact," redundancies like"exact same" and"completely empty," or overly verbose phrases like"at this point in time.

Others have been words and phrases that are genuinely offensive. For 1982, a mother encouraged the banishment of the word"retarded," writing that her daughter with a mental disability would,"with proper stimulation ... be able to learn and to understand much more than we believe possible."

In a world where the powers that be normalized actual 'Gaslighting', It's no wonder they would be happy to get rid of the term that reminds us.. 🤓

I would like the following overused & not cool words added to the banishedwords list: Pop-up (if not a tent) Proprietary blend “My play on” in food speak. speakeasy (we are not during Prohibition!) “Curated” when talking about any shop. hidden gem Pretty much any hipster word.

'Quiet quitting' should have never been a phrase to begin with. The very concept behind it is just plain stupid and indicative of how corporations treat their employees like indentured servants.

Banished list should have also included words 'Pent-up demand'! It is super widely used on business news providers like business, CNBC, etc. Since pandemic fears eased and business started picking... have been hearing this term, even when 'recession' is gradually rolling in!🤦

Perhaps one of the words they should have suggested banishing was used in the quote by the university's president! 'Irregardless' isn't a real word. It's 'regardless.' One would hope that a university president would know that.

I don’t even know what GOAT means!

I get it. Messi won the World Cup so we can retire GOAT.

'weaponize' should have been on there

I'll say what I want purr

Goat is for Greatest of All Time but greatly overused for clouts

Can they please add “kiddo” to the list? It’s cringy.

PLEASE add the phrase, 'tell me you don't know X without telling me you don't know X,' and 'that's it, that's the tweet.' IT'S OVER

May we add “Jaw Dropping” and “At the end of the day,” to this list?

why not “literally?” because…it beats everything else out by MILES!

And used the word 'irregardless' when announcing it. Lol

Forgot 'stepping back' to mean quitting

pretty amazed that vibe isn't on here

Pretty fucking obvious why npr wants people to stop using the word gaslighting 🙄

Add “literally” to the list as well.

I am appalled that they didn’t even mention the fact that newspeak allows you to turn nouns into verbs at will. Gift & source, to mention only the “greatest hits,” ARE NOT VERBS.

Oh dear, here comes the butthurt RWNJs. Can we banish 'conservative' and 'Christian' as they have lost their original meanings?

ok imma keep saying goat tho cause i'm not about to listen to a lake

so N-word still alive and kicking?

May was well banish “woman” single leftists don’t know what those are anymore.

🤦

Hanley joking I guess.

Or maybe,it looks like it is Hanley at fault and you quoted.

Bring back 'audacious,' for creating this list is nothing less.

Damn. I was working toward my GOAThood.

Was quiet quitting a thing ?

GOAT, overdue!

Safe and effective should make the list

Could we banish the use of swag when one means swagger and verse when one means versus? Asking for a friend - thanks.

Remember 'slippery slope.' That one really grated after you heard it 80 times on CNN.

Quiet quitting lasted about a week.

Do people say “inflection point” on a regular basis?

DCAWWS - Does Confuse Acronyms With Words Silly. Acronyms are Abbreviations, most often initializations, that become words in their own right. GPV (General Purpose Vehicle) becoming 'jeep' being the SSE Standard Scolary Example. If still in uppercase an acronym is best guess.

Democrat liberal and progressive should be on this list.

Now let’s banish

Interesting notice that WOKE did not make the NPR list....of course not.

Can they add 'like' and 'literally'?

Sounds fascist

hey LASERGIANT1 did you see that? have you heard of this? goat is no longer goated

I assume woke was on last year's list? I hope it is on the list somewhere, anyway.

Banish yourselves for being word Nazi losers.

Where T F is “Literally”? Please make this word stop!!!

The term 'bruh' should be on that list, too.

Goats are the goats 🐐

'Irregardless' wasn't a word to begin with. People who use it mean 'regardless.'

Goat is what they called the LAST in their class at WestPoint_USMA George Pickett (USMA 1846) Hero of the Pig War, for example.

As an alternative to GOAT, I submit 'Best In The Current History'

They missed the boat by not including 'unprecedented' for BOTH overuse AND over-emphasis (making it sound like something 'bad'). After all, 'everything' is unprecedented when it happens/occurs for the first time! Monday mondaythoughts MondayMorning

Missing is 'unprecedented' for overuse AND over-emphasis! After all, 'everything' is unprecedented when it happens/occurs for the first time! Monday mondaythoughts

'Irregardless, moving forward, GOAT absolutely should be reserved for only the most amazing, once in several lifetimes individual. Does that make sense? Good talk.

Says who? And why do you listen are far far more important questions

How about news on disfunctional governments and 🌎 economy?

Please add “natty” to the list.

If we banish 'moving forward' how will middle managers construct sentences moving forward?

School lists phrases in a banished 'words' list. 😐

Awful article.

squirlkit Some of these words and phrases have been in use for decades, so they're not going anywhere. As an aside, I just learned what GOAT means. I've wondered.

You forgot: “Top of mind.” 😂😂😂

🤪🤪

never heard GOAT used

amazing

So once again, yts take phrases from AAVE, run them into the ground, then complain they're 'over used' 🤦🏻‍♂️ Tale as old as time in America.

How about “trans” anything

I ain’t gonna quit using them

Yes to everyone one these !! Please add these as well - 'there's a lot to unpack there' & 'let's circle back'

“Based on my reporting”. What the heck does that mean?

GOAT

Let’s circle back to this list. I think there are several key areas for improvement. (See what I did. there?)

ASMR

“I appreciate you” deserves consideration. It could be sincere, but then again, maybe not.

What's up with overpaid university professors trying to cancel words and phrases? That's not their job. The fact that they want to cancel 'gaslighting' really set off my bs detector.

It be what it do.

The left holds disdain for free speech.

Also: “irregardless,” used by the Lake Superior State University president in his quote.

I would love to ban the word gaslighting… do you think public officials and other high profile folks will stop gaslighting so we can? I don’t know of a synonym. I never even knew the word until Sean Spicer’s crowd size and Kellyann’s alternative facts

Thanks to the wonderful work of rianjohnson in GlassOnion, anyone who calls themself a 'disruptor' will be met with laughter and derision in 2023.

Can we please, PLEASE, banish the word 'narrative?'

'Quiet quitting' is something workers should've done a long time ago. There was a teacher who was fired, recently, because she posted a pic of herself at Starbucks when her boss had wanted her to come in early to work. No one should be forced to work early or over with no pay!

Can’t quit “Does that make sense?” Besides says these words are banished for 2022 so I can use them in 2023?

Ah, old people reacting negatively to new(ish) slang. Tale as old as time.
