Students and community members rallied, calling for solutions to the city’s gun violence, which has recently come to the doorstep of schools like Juarez. The shooting also sheds light on the debate over school resource officers in schools.

Some schools, like Juarez, have voted to remove the officers while others have elected to keep them.

Ald. Matt O’Shea represents an area of the city that includes Morgan Park High School. The local school council voted to keep their school resource officer. “School resource officers are Chicago police officers who are assigned inside the building. In theory, what they should be doing is establishing relationships with the student body so they know that they can come to them if there’s a problem…,” O’Shea said. “I think they can be an effective tool and they can be helpful.”Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez points out that Chicago communities are all different and have different needs.

Benito Juarez students stage walk out in first day since Pilsen school shootingStudents mourned their dead friends and called for safety and justice as they demonstrated during a walkout Monday. Powerful. Accomolishes so much besides a day off school. 🤔 And the action is meaningless. Until the gang lifestyle is changed the results will be the same. These kids did nothing but skip class, then later they'll complain about the inequalities of tax funded education. If memory serves me correctly, this was one of the first schools that embraced the progressive policy of getting the police out of their school. Looks like that’s not really working out in that gang infested neighborhood.
