UT Southwestern Medical Center manager devises running plan, creates apparel company to combat lymphedema
She was diagnosed with lymphedema, and doctors told her to stop most of her physical activity. Now, six years after the diagnosis, Swersky, 37, will finally get her chance to run the half marathon. “As long as I maintain it, I will be able to maintain it for the rest of my life,” Swersky said. “It’s also not a condition that needs to completely rule my world, I can still do everything that I want to do in life, I just need to figure out how to do it.”
This year was different. After countless hours of learning to manage the condition, running a half marathon is now possible. So Swersky — who works as a program manager for UT Southwestern Medical Center — created her own brand. If she was going to have to wear the compression garment, which she finds to be somewhat unsightly, she wanted to cover it with something that would empower her and let her regain control.
