New federal research says colleges mislead students with confusing financial aid letters. The consequences can run from extra debt to quitting school.

Here's how it happens: When students get accepted to college, the school sends a document explaining how much financial aid the student is eligible to receive. Usually that's some combination of grants, scholarships, work-study and federal student loans. The new GAO report looked at more than 500 financial aid offers from a nationally representative selection of colleges across the country, and found that colleges repeatedly failed to follow specific best practices.

College is a business

NPR loving colleges are doing this? Cheating students for money? And you know everyone of these administrators (this very day) are cackling around the water cooler about how Trump got caught in a tax situation. And guess what? They are just as dishonest as Trump. So Delicious.

Since the U.S. actually became a lender in 1993, when was the last time the Student Loan Administration and its agents (financial aid offices) were independently audited for compliance to consumer lending laws?

NPR are like. Write them a taxpayers check now!!! Lib destroying America mentality

Colleges and universities misled students with nonsensical post modernist majors.

Educational institutions are more confusing nowadays than ever.

Well maybe we should simplify it for them to just pay for everything, right ? You guys are so transparent. It's ridiculous.

Liberal steal

$120 Billions sent to Ukraine. The money was there. Now you know.

Aaaaand, Biden will give you money just because.

Perhaps the money should be loaned to the universities and they can lend it to their students. I suspect they would be a bit more discerning with their student selection.

ronlieber, author of excellent book “The Price You Pay for College,” also says offer letters are often confusing.

It's a standard practice too. Needs a legal fix

Its giving 'scam likely' vibes to me!!

Shameful

Is that why they don’t teach them to read well?

If you can't understand the financial aid letters perhaps college isn't the place for you. Stop trying to get those of us who were smart enough not to be duped to feel sorry for these people. None of us want to pay for their mistakes.

They gotta keep that money rolling in to pay for all those DEI programs and administrators. If they would just start firing bigoted professors, they wouldn't need a bunch of administrators to tell them how not to be bigots.

Student loans should come from colleges, not the government.

So many of these schools have enough $ in their tax free endowments to pay for every accepted student but they don’t! They scam students and families by leaving them in crushing debt w/out providing a useful degree. Tax the rich? Yep then also tax the endowments

Lots of colleges, especially Ivy League, are nothing but endowment management schemes. Education is second.

Shame on capitalism. Shame on capitalists who care more about their profit than future their own country. Shame on people who take advantage of their country‘s freedom

Oh no... not misinformation...

It's almost like these institutions of 'higher learning' only really care about making money How many professors making over $100k/yr would be willing to take a pay cut to allow lower tuition rates for students? How many?

Disband the Department of Education.

If students reading comprehension is at such a level that they cannot understand the terms of their financial aid, should they really be in college?

So true!
