Increasingly, there’s a recognition that what international students have been promised is not what they’re getting. It’s led to calls for the Canadian government to refresh its strategy. But what would a new international student program look like?

urged better co-ordination to ensure the number of international students admitted are in line with thelevel of permanent residents admitted each year to avoid further “friction.”International enrolment there had blossomed from 256,553 in 2002 to 583,483 in 2009 as migrants were drawn by the opportunities to work and stay in the country permanently before Canberra decided to rein in an unruly sector by “desegregating education and immigration.

International students, meanwhile, go where the opportunities are. Experts say students traditionally turn to other jurisdictions with fewer perceived barriers when countries such as Australia restrict the pipeline. “It feels like you are doing this entirely alone. And maybe that’s just how it is,” says Azrieh, who works full time as an associate producer at CANADALAND. “Maybe I wasn’t ready to move across the country, across the globe, to a country that I didn’t know. But it felt like I was doing everything alone.

“If you’re coming from an institution’s perspective, my goal is to support students in their education and their experience in Canada, versus the government saying, ‘OK, we want to support this person because they’re a future immigrant and we want to retain them,’ ” she says.“The way it’s structured now works well for the government, because essentially the students themselves are responsible for the settlement process.

“The whole objective of international education is just to make money and to grow the economy. It has really little to do with education,” says Kahlon. “If we’re honest about what the international education strategy is, it is just to raise Canada’s GDP.”

How about focusing on education and not ideologies that are unappealing to new employers

They're buying Canadian residency with their tuition fees

This is so insane. The question is “how can we milk more money out of foreigners to subsidize our cheap domestic rates”. That’s all that matters. We owe nothing to international students at all.

I'm not sure it wants to fix it.

Keep them outta Brampton. All full here!

35k for this kind of education, it is not worth it!

The tuition is high because their parents don't contribute to the tax base that pays for the schools.

Such garbage. Other countries also have international student fees. Don't want to come to Canada and pay full fees, choose another country.

Their useless loophole degrees and under the table cash jobs aren’t paying off!? Damn Canada be racist.

Reduce number of international students. Studying abroad is a luxury, if you can't afford it, you shouldn't come.

Stopping thinking in immigration as a cash cow is a good start.

they re questioning their investment After only ONE year of being here, they get to apply for their entire generation to come here while i ve been trying to bring one single family member from europe with certification and degrees up the ass for everyone and it isnt enough

They know if they whine enough, Trudeau will give them taxpayer cash.

They are getting into universities before Canadians because they have to pay more, I’m sorry but I have no sympathy for someone who gets their degree here and takes it back to India or Saudi Arabia. What do they think this is?

International students and universities is an immigration scheme. Universities need the tuition to pay the exorbitant salaries and foreign students (who aren’t here to learn) get a pathway to residency.

With such a federal government 'strategy' what are the checks and balances to guarantee that Canadian students are not being denied entry or expelled from Canadian colleges, universities and residences to make ROOM for these foreign 'cash cows?'

who could have foreseen that making it so its unaffordable to live or go to school here would make it so people wouldnt want to come here for school.

Here is the solution: buyer beware. Canadian taxpayers have no obligation to underwrite the risks taken by foreigners in their decision to come here. It is unfortunate when it doesn’t work out, but Canadians cannot be expected to foot the bill. Why does this need to be stated?

Predatory colleges, foreign students who come here to work under the table, businesses who pay them below legal wages all part of the mix

Sorry but it's a privilege, not a right. Go somewhere else if you can't afford it. They are not obligated to lower fees for international students. A country must take care of their citizens first.

Trudeaus reckless immigration, foreign students, and TFWs policies are destroying Canada.

🙄🤣

Nah I’m good

Fund colleges adequately so they don't have to rely on foreign students.

Yes and their predatory relationship with TFWs as well.

It’s not just Canada. We just opened several new medical schools but didn’t offer any places to British students. The overseas students pay more so get the places.

Drastically CUT the numbers allowed to historic amounts - like down to 100,000. Problem solved.

Don't you mean the 'predators' being the students looking for the free ride and a ticket to freedom?

Charging same money to everyone.

It's also unfair to domestic students as well. I still remember 30 years ago where in competitive study placements in which there is always more applicants than placement spots, schools would favour international students over domestic ones because they had to pay more to enroll.

plz research ur story better , many students come here just to work , college is the easiest way to get visa its a racket

Students and agents select courses anywhere it is easy to get residency and they spoil so much. Shit things are going on.

Why shouldn’t we look at them as anything other than cash cows? They aren’t citizens, we don’t owe them anything.

Having worked at a college in KW, I can assure you international students are viewed as cash cows.

Maybe the students and can start by speaking good English?

Makes up for THE CASH COW GIMIGRANTS Milking Social Service for Years.

We can start by fixing this international student program. It’s disgusting. They are charged 3 times what we pay to the collages and the students are left completely on their own. No support, no mentors, no help with housing absolutely nothing.

'PROMISED' Their own country cant even keep their promises to their citizens and these 'opportunistic' individuals have the audacity to criticize Canada 🤣🤣🤣 Yall welcome to leave anytime.

Deport!

So the recruiters are liars...

Deport them all

We can’t, our university system would collapse if we didn’t milk international students for all they’re worth

It can't be that bad because our colleges and being inundated with foreign students. If Canada were that bad, why would they be fighting to stay here?

Our education system is 50 years of affirmative action social reproduction indoctrination, which is why they justify exploiting international students

3) So, study permit and PGWP are dangerous like a pack of cigarettes. It can destroy people and their families for nothing. So, Canada should start putting picture of all dead students and how their life was destroyed after getting a permit, like a warning on a pack of cigarette

2) In reality, Post graduate work permit holder lost their most important phase of career, huge amount of money and left to live in misery for rest of their life by Canada. only paths like fake marriage will be left for many similar to Australia and USA, that is even worse.

1)Now, In this video it is presented by BBC that Canada need a lot of workers and will approve PR to 500,000 people every year but in reality only 261,000 will get pr under economic class and that almost the backlog that we already have in the system.

Why would Canadian taxpayers pay for international students ?

Trudeau doesn't give a damn about Canadians or newcomers. He work for corporations.

They should be thankful when are own people don't get the same opportunities in our own country

1st. Don’t talk to the liberal NDP dictatorship and vote PPC to solve it ❤️🇨🇦
