The Department of Education directed schools to avoid holding extravagant Christmas parties, stressing that students and personnel should not be forced to give monetary contributions. It also barred schools and offices from soliciting cash or gifts for the festivities.

It said that contributions for Christmas parties, themes, costumes, decoration, and exchange gifts, whether in cash or in kind, should be voluntary. Party themes, 'must not result in expenses that will burden parents, learners, and DepEd personnel,' the department added. 'Gift-giving should be guided by the spirit of sharing and should not lead to extravagant spending.
