Centurions take lead late, but Southern Section Div. 6 champions score last to take a 49-45 victory. QB Samuel Cooper runs for 2 TDs, catches 1 TD for University City.

It did not turn out to be very welcoming for University City High’s football team, but the Centurions nearly pulled off the upset despite a horrendous second quarter.

University City controlled the second half with a 17-0 surge to take a 45-42 lead on quarterback Samuel Cooper’s 11-yard run for a TD with 2:20 to play. “Our boys stayed the course as they have all season and fought their way back into it. They left it all on the field.’’San Jacinto turned three interceptions and a fumble into touchdowns before halftime. That helped the Tigers to a 42-28 lead at the break, as Dortch was responsible for all six touchdowns by San Jacinto.
