York Memorial students spoke of being afraid to go to school, of seeing fights and even about washrooms lacking doors, toilet paper and soap.

staged a mass walkout on Friday to protest what they say is an unsafe learning environment, over-policing and a lack of teachers, which means someNajmo Mohammed, a Grade 11 student who has been feeling “profoundly unsafe,” finds herself longing for online learning, rather than having to physically be at school.

Students said recent media coverage of their school — incidents of escalating violence, armed police responding to a 911 call about a gun and teachers refusing to work because of facilities issues and unsafe conditions — painted youth as criminals. After the walkout, students made their way to a nearby Toronto District School Board office to speak about their concerns, which even included washrooms lacking doors, toilet paper and soap dispensers.

When asked about students’ comments that some have experienced racism by staff, she said “that’s shocking and surprising.” Meanwhile, at a Thursday night public meeting, parents said their children are frightened to go to school, and many called for a police presence at the school, which serves a predominantly racialized student population in a underserved community.

“My son is in Grade 12 in a computer science class and he hasn’t had a teacher, or even a substitute teacher, for two weeks,” said one father. “So his class is not even happening.”

They made it unsafe. The students made it unsafe. Notice not a single parent or students blame themselves as if the problems just occurred overnight. Not a single accountability. Its always someone else's fault be it the schoolboard, teacher, principal, police bit never them 🤥

Over policing...scared....

They booted the police a while ago. So

Abolish the leftard school boards.

Diversity comes home to roost!

'Over policing' is hardly a problem it seems. 🙄🙄🙄

Was such a great idea to bring all these people here🤪

Go woke, go chaotic evil.

DrPeiTO Action please!

Police needed in that school

Underserved community...what?

To those of you mocking the slogan 'Diversity is our strength', what are you driving at? Make your point plain. Should we not live in a multicultural/ethnic society? From my understanding of the story, it's a small group of thugs that are ruining it for the whole school populous.

The REAL problem, not enough decolonization. And micro aggressions. Once again Toronto Star siding with the fascists.

The way today's student look/act/behave etc one would be scared to go to one for any reason. The rules that once existed have long been forgotten and now everything goes. But then look at your genera population... not a good example for them. Then Tv, Net... They hv no chance

Then maybe they should stop committing acts of violence.

This stuff is promulgated by media like the Star..this is their success story.

Send your kids to private school and these won't be issues in your life.

Hmm, what particular group is responsible for people feeling unsafe at this school, and for that matter in the whole city? Let us ponder that, lol.

“I know how it disproportionately affects certain communities, like my community — the Somali community.....Thanks Pierre

Diversity is our strength

Thanks Pierre

Sit your ass in that chair and learn you paid to go to school and learn you do realize at the end will fail

Welcome to the outcome of woke Liberal policies and an utter lack of discipline. Suspend or expel the problem children and ask Police to charge any of those responsible for criminal behaviour. They need a zero tolerance policy.

All whites are RACIST

Better give the janitors a raise, Maybe then they will their jobs.

The TDSB is solely responsible for their purposeful lack of support. Disgusting

This may be a collective issue and only way to resolve is a series of meetings with student parents, teachers and principle of school, to discuss collectively on how to resolve !

At my school, a kid brought a beer into class once. We thought he was one bad dude; practically the worst thing that happened in my 13 years there. But, diversity is our strength, and we will be more diverse by 1,500,000 over the next 3 years.

That's the problem with Socialized education and socialism in general. It's time to dismantle the one-size-fits-all collectivist education model and replace it with competitive, private-sector alternatives, funded by vouchers. 'Diversity is our strength!'

🤔🤔 a lot of conflicting statements in that story

The teachers and Admin are scared themselves. This is what you get when you allow students to run the school. Trustees should be held accountable. onted etfo osstf

Diversity!
