In a new nationwide survey, over two-thirds of high school principals reported “substantial political conflict' with parents or community members in the last year. 'Something needs to change or else we will all quit,' one principal says.

That's how one high school principal in Nevada describes the 2021-'22 school year, when conflicts with parents and community members were all too common.

The resulting report is rich with detail and gut-punch quotes that school leaders offered researchers in exchange for anonymity. NPR was not able to independently verify educators' stories or identities. Below are a handful of the survey's biggest takeaways.Nearly half of principals surveyed say the level of parent/community conflict they saw last year was either"more" or"much more" than anything they'd seen before the pandemic.

"We had a group of parents that went bananas on us on the masking, and believed that we were encouraging kids to get a shot that surely had a microchip in it because the government wanted to control their brains," remembers one Nevada principal. "You can't [use newspapers] anymore. You can't use CNN because the parents will go nuts on you. You can't use Fox because it's so out there. It's hard to teach kids about what's going on in any kind of context, because there is no context anymore."

Please do quit! Only the radicals are complaining because parents discovered they have been applying their communistic principles onto our children. Singing…”Hit the ride Jack, and don’t you come back no more, no more…”

Maybe schools should focus more on having the kids at their school graduate w math/science/reading skills at their actual grade level, and less on teaching them to question their gender/sexuality & politics. Only 30% of kids read/write at their grade level upon graduation.

Many in education, unions, special interests, and politicians are just mad because parents are responding to what has been happening - the transformation of education in the name of UNESCO's SDGs (4 Education). We'd like our kids educated w/o a huge helping of activism.

Good. Quit. You serve the people, not politicians. If you don't understand that, you have no right existing.

This is a bullshit report… the conflict came when kids were forced to learn from home and parents got to experience what was being taught to their children.. they have a right to object, shutting them down is censorship

More censorship of one side is definitely what’s needed for everyone to feel heard!

Yes please quit.

Now that parents have demanded more access to their kids' schools and teachers, it's suddenly a burden.

This country is going to have to decide who has legal authority over children.

Can't blame them

Yes the culture war is real

teachers need to teach STEM, now how to choose a gender.

Hint: if everyone around you is crazy…it’s not them, it’s you.

They meed to dtart listening to parents or they should quit.

To be replaced by TrumpCult fanatics. Oh, this country could be in for a rough ride. 😒

High school principals are putting parents in detention. They must write on a chalk board 100 times. 'I am a pain in the ass because of stupid culture wars.'

How could there be any political conflict if teachers and principals are neutral?

That’s their point to blow up public education 😞

Keep the pressure on so they all quit

Parents need to learn their place. Your job is help your child grow, which inevitably means your child will surpass you. Holding them back because of your own inadequacy, bigotry, and ignorance will only hurt them in the long run.

Liberals want homosexual children to be celebrated. What about children with Down's syndrome? Why are they still discriminated against? Why are they sent to separate schools? Does NPR hate children with Down's syndrome?

We really need to learn how to respect one another. Divide & conquer seems to be the agenda when the only way forward is to unite & embrace change. Be kind & understanding. We already had a mass exodus of good teachers these past few yrs. Education is vital for the future.

The last thing in the world I would want to do is look after someone else's kids.

Just another example of right wing domestic terrorist attacking America. The gop is a cancer on our country and we won’t survive with them around. It is sad that they preach love for America but are single handedly trying to destroy it.

They’re accountable to the parents of the students

Teach the kids STEM and stay the eff out of the bs social justice or woke

SchoolChoiceNow

Maybe you should be teaching fundamentals … reading, writing, English, math, science, … Not socially engineering children to embrace your politics and belief system.

You did this

That’s what *they* want to happen.

Trump effect Right Wing Extremists are destroying America

Don't let the door hit them in the ass on the way out.

Given the state of schools today, I'm ok with that.

Good. We gotta get the principals out of principaling. Gotta get the teachers outta teaching & most importantly, we need to get the drs out of medicine. Only then, will our society truly thrive.

Only the fate of our democracy rests in the hands of those who fight the GOP’s agenda.

Maybe they should quit getting drag queens to do story hour. We now home school to get off the gay agenda taught in school now.

*Introducing LGBT propaganda ….made things rough as hell for them.

Principals report substantial political conflict over: Teaching about race & racism Policies & practices related to LGBTQ+ student rights Student access to books in the school library So don't start nuthin, won't be nuthin - Wil Smith

Right wing/Republican/conservative/Christian think tanks funding culture war hatred and mob rule. Despicable behavior from these hateful bigots.

Maybe parents wouldn’t be pushing back if schools weren’t teaching controversial and/or unpopular ideas

All children deserve the opportunity to learn that they are merely the embodiment of a racial archetype that determines their moral worth and which qualifies them for collective racial punishment or reward. If public schools don't devote themselves to this mission, who will?

NPR shares some of the blame in this.

As our military personnel stand strong regardless of the threat, so too must all school leaders! They need to buck it up and defend the system, not run from it!

You helped with that.

Lol just quit. People with no discernible skill sets are doing great in this job market. The world needs whiny ditch-diggers.

Bye… you teachers, the woke, are out of control.

It is not an educators job to argue politics or project biased political opinions to school children. Only adults can vote, so leave politics out of schools at least until college. Teach reading, writing, and math, the skills modern children are truly lacking.

Good! PLEASE QUIT. These woke groomer teachers need to be kicked to the streets.

If 2/3 of high school principals are having issues with the parents and community, those principals need to learn to take direction from their bosses or quit.

Because many schools overstep their authority and in addition to teaching the basics, they go beyond into areas that are none of their business such as morality, gender identity, etc. They will continue to get conflict if they continue, so they probably should quit.

Quitting is exactly why the Right is doing this. It's not trying to fix anything. It doesn't offer any solutions. It wins if it can only destroy public education.

Can’t imagine why.

That's the point. Republicans want to destroy public education. Ruining public schools, demonizing teachers, and endangering children are all the plan, not accidental side-effects.

Yes all woke principals need to quit.

Oh no!! You mean the lockdown of schools, ironically driven by teachers unions, highlighted for parents what is actually being taught and how is taught and -horror- they have strong opinions about Their children? Extreme liberalism in schools has had the wool ripped off.

Uneducated parents making decisions about how to educate their kids. The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people wrongly overestimate their knowledge or ability in a specific area. In other words... Trumpism.

Our public schools suck anyway let them quit. Nothing will change we will still rank at the bottom in every subject. Sad. They are doing nothing for the children all about them and their narrative.

Then stick to educating instead of activism.

Get the Liberals out of the schools with their whacky ideas and start having schools teach again instead of teaching them to despise their parents.

Translated into Normal People's English: Two thirds of high school principles are getting pushback from parents for their racist politicization of, and introduction of grooming into, classroom instruction and school policy.

I don’t know if it would be bad for America if they all were to quit. But it would be difficult for the replacement staff to do any worse than they are today…

These people are free to quit. I hear that McDonald’s is hiring

great bring in teachers that don't want to indoctrinate or push their own agenda.

This is the first step to ensure the principals are are the same page as the parents. Glad to hear they know they need to change.

So maybe the left should stop force feeding it down out patriotic throats. MakeAmericaGreatAgain

“Your terms are acceptable.”

Maybe they can stop being marxist groomers pushing pseudoscientific woke garbage on kids? If they want to indoctrinate children with their woke religion, they SHOULD quit. We wouldn't tolerate a Christian doing that, telling kids they'll go to hell unless they pray the rosary.

Politics has figured into way too many conversations. It’s affected families, friendships and now our children’s education. Sad…

Yes, please do quit. Pretty soon there will be no public schools. All these left a wokey joking clowns out there trying to destroy entire generation of children. Sad. Pathetic and may they all have the life that they deserve.

Do it, quit.... 😐

They should all definitely quit. Let those parents deal with the unruly kids for once...

Ah, the wretched old hand of Betsy DeVos continues to do horrible things

The future is full of homeschooled extremists lol

They are already quitting

They're not their children.
