Just 13% of care leavers go to university at 18, compared with 45% of the wider population.

Deep down, Zarak Khan,18, always knew he wanted to study medicine.

"If the school had supported me by providing transport and even mental health support, it would have really helped."I always wanted to go to higher education - but being the first person in my family to go to university, I had no guidance. I was a bit clueless."His university, Birmingham, has been incredibly supportive, he says, lowering his entry requirements, giving him a welcome pack when he enrolled and offering mentoring.

"My experiences, yes they were difficult, but in a way I'm grateful for what I've been through - because it's made me realise it's a privilege to even be in education."

Unfortunately many do! However I can introduce you to my friend, she came to live with us at 11 and had rarely been to school Today she has a masters degree and is a social worker! Much depends on how intelligent they are! Cant keep a good girl down!
