More than 60% of posts on teacher supply panels in the Dublin region are vacant, as well as one post in ten across the rest of the country, according to Department of Education figures received by RTÉ News

The panels were established across the country to ensure a ready supply of substitute teachers to primary schools in their local area, but a significant number of the panels in the Dublin area are either completely empty or significantly understaffed, because of the teacher shortage.

Out of 183 posts supposed to serve 29 school clusters across county Dublin, just 70 positions are currently filled. These are all full-time fixed-term teaching positions, but no teachers can be found to take up the posts. The data show that 9% of posts on supply panels across the country outside of Co Dublin are unfilled.

However, school principals have complained in recent months that many of the panels are not fulfilling their function because they are either empty or significantly understaffed.

TeachersPay: major issue plus poor contract hours. Teachers expected to survive on 7hours, 11hrs or part-time hours especially at 2nd level. Teachers gone to MiddleEast cos of better pay/ conditions & jobs Education_Ire NormaFoleyTD1 TUIunion astiunion INTOnews .

And their first thought is to have some kind of accommodation provided? How about pay a decent wage. The price of accommodation isn’t the issue the pay is.

The des are far too restrictive around qualifications. People who are just as qualified being employed as unqualified & given less pay & no rights because they havnt got a PME but have other masters and postgrads in education + specialised undergrads.

I suggest there is a huge problem with the on line recruitment process, especially for part time and substitution teaching posts.

This is a consequence of 12 Years of FineGael's Housing policy...expect the same with other essential services such as Gardai and Nurses. FG base greed is slowly causing a gradual breakdown in society.

Taking money from Qatar is one thing , taking money from a source like the 'independent' shows our Joe is nothing more than a loudmouth hooker , and an ugly one at that .

NQTs are paid on a lower scale that their colleagues and often on 12-16 hour contracts and the government negotiated a 3% pay increase at a time of 9% inflation so a pay cut in real terms. Quality of education will drop as teachers are replaced by parents filling in.

Qualified teachers can earn significantly more and get it tax free teaching in the middle East. Sometimes accommodation is provided. If they ever come home, after a few years, if they haven't gone nuts, they can return with a cash deposit and a good chunk of the mortgage covered.

The article makes reference to these jobs being full time fixed-term positions. There lies one of the issues. Most young and newly qualified teachers are working contract to contract. They aren’t permanent & no job security. Many often dispensed easily by schools for someone else

That is awful but why are they still giving teachers leave of absence when there is a shortage. Surely it should be dependent if they can be spared.
