NEW: Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce will speak to the media at 5 p.m. following the strike deadline for education workers. ottnews

Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce is set to speak Sunday evening following a 5 p.m. deadline to strike a deal with education workers.

The union provided five-day notice of their intention to strike last Wednesday, saying that talks “broke down” despite “many late hour attempts to achieve a freely negotiated settlement.” The Progressive Conservatives carried out their promise with Bill 28—the “Keeping Students in Class Act—which not only mandated a contract onto education support workers but also made striking illegal.

Don’t give in again to these unions this has to stop or do they rule are province. They sure act like there in control

Parents if your child needs support, there won't be any extra staffing.the government is not supporting this.

He is always late

My sources say the workers wanted to vote on the deal last week. FredHahnCUPE kept pushing for these new positions even though the members wanted to end this. It was Fred, waltonmom and the union leadership who pushed everyone to the 5pm brink. Nothing changed from earlier.

we need details. What did they accept? Was it $3.59 or more?

fu fraudnation

I'd assume if Lecce is late that a deal was made. If not why wouldn't CUPE take this time to jump the media and get their side of the story out? I think a deal was reached and it was agreed that the Gov would break the news.

There's no strike happening

Lecce is late... Again. Imagine showing up late to work as often as Lecce. FireLecce

The minister's media availability has been delayed by 20 minutes.

I support education workers.

Leach is announcing ..he has to be the hero ..although anyone who is in education knows his true title

Is there a live feed

So CUPE doesn't care that majority of people have to work tomorrow to earn a living, but in striking is counting on support from these same people. IdontstandwithCUPE

CUPEs fault. Second strike....come on. At this point....starve them into acceptance. Make sure teachers know you are serious.

To tell us that our kids will be locked out of our schools tomorrow b/c his government refused to bargain in good faith & wasted all their time & energy on PR spin, ad campaigns vilifying ed workers, & straight-up lies y'all keep repeating w/o fact-checking?

Ontario parents worried about another disruption to learning as possible strike loomsPossible second Ontario teachers’ strike follows two years of classrooms being disrupted by pandemic I'm voting for conservative because I feel that Liberals ruined Canada as a country and Canadians lives as well, however don't know how I voted for Mr. Ford. Only two sectors in Ontario are good: Health & Schools. He destroyed the health & now turned to the schools!! cheers Ford These workers DESERVE A PAY RAISE! Their union, needs to stop filling their pockets, and fill their members. What’s odd/ all this unity around money but not around the other members pushed to poverty over mandated vaccines they chose not to take🤔 comes down to choice. Education unions disrupting everyone on a yearly basis! IDontSupportCUPE
