JUST IN: Ontario tells schools to make plans for remote learning next week if education workers strike: memo

“If a school board determines that it cannot maintain the healthy and safe operation of schools in-person, school boards must support students in a speedy transition to remote learning,” the memo reads.

But Education Minister Stephen Lecce said he's hopeful that the two sides will get back to the table. The union represents custodial staff, educational assistants, administrative staff and other workers. The union has said since that the two sides recently agreed to a 3.59 per cent wage increase, but that CUPE is still not happy with staffing levels for their workers.

“All of that crisis that happened just a few weeks ago was unnecessary, just like what's happening now is unnecessary. There are resources available. The financial accountability officer says there's a budget surplus, there are ways in which the government could make these investments and actually help schools that actually help our kids. And that's really now the focus of bargaining for our folks.

Since we are progressively advancing and remote learning is an option, why have brick-and-mortar schools? Provide families benefits to stay at home ... I'll bet it will be cheaper in the long run with fewer issues and indoctrination.

Here we go again. The kids are out last.

There is no such thing as 'remote learning'. There may be 'remote instruction' but not every child can 'learn' remotely. Its a shame that with all your resources CP24 still doesn't comprehend that simple fact.

DougFordMustResign

In other words... Ontario government does not want to negotiate with the workers and they're just going to let them hang dry until they have no income left and forced to go back to work.

Online is not a tool that should be used here. Why punish kids and their families?

DougFordMustResign

My kids,if they weren't already done school, would not be crossing a virtual picket line

This is all on CUPE. Mandate all along was to strike. No public sector union should ever be allowed to strike and hold the province hostage. Fire them all.

The plan all along Throw it In The parents face instead of making a deal it worked for the pandemic why not here. Neither side cares cause it means.a break for teachers and the kids still learn from remote learning.

Oh you mean a “stay at home mandate” to help lower infections?

Ontario gov and Cupe works are playing with kids..they don't know what they want. Education is free means..kids should not suffer. No Advil,no school

first covid nonsense, now this. our kids are a casualty of the new Kanada. Disgusting.

Should just say screw them and go remote. 🤷🏻‍♂️ They can go find work elsewhere. Thats the way itll go eventually

Let em picket all winter and freeze their asses off. Christmas should be fun on strike pay

Greedy chicks!

I am going to strike next Tuesday because PP told us to buy BTC and now I lost money I want mymoney back this is not fair helied to us 😂😂😂😂 give me a break teacher Iam tired

And to think, 'Fat Meat bag Ford' recently got voted back in and him and his Dolts let something like this happen. The innocent kids are the ones who are truly losing out in the end.

Depressing!! my child is in a Francophone school... learning a second language and this wishy-washy education system is a disappointment. It's devastating to everyone especially a entrepreneur moms who do not work from home 😪 💔 😞 😔 😢 😪 💔 😞 😔 CBCToronto TheCurrentCBC

Already 2 years have been wasted due to Covid. Pls stop playing with future citizens life and education.

Legislate them bad to work ... charge bigger fines or lower your demands

World wide pandemic: remote learning bad Slightly more money for essential employees: remote learning good Pathetic

sayno to onlinelearning standforcupe CUPESolidarity MPP’s get a raise of $16000 but school staff cannot have a $3.25 an hour raise? ministryofeducation

After that Joe fresh employees incident in India fiasco I'm willing to take in all the kids at loblaws to start them working early in life .. let me know I'll open up a makeshift factory here .

Two tier schools is ok. But health care bad. It’s coming. SMH print print print.

The system has failed Ontario children. Online learning is a disaster. Grades 1-3 learn to read. Grades 4-8 READ TO LEARN. I feel sorry that the kids affected in this time period of the last 3 years will suffer so greatly over time

Enough is enough.

CUPE needs to keep negotiating. Striking only hurts the kids they are flighting for.

CUPE is doing this for the kids 🤡🌎

NO! Remote learning is unacceptable! Enough of this BS! Get your asses to work!

Do you bots realize there's tons of people doing this. And con radicals.

It’s funny that CUPE thinks the govt gives a shit about them. Not only did you not accept their numerous offers, already strike, etc but now with Covid and RSV running rampant and the no mask mandates, hospital situations, you think striking will do anything? LOL

We won't be doing online to hard on the kids and not dealing with headaches differently now kids Tylenol is hard to find

Time will not be a friend to CUPE and their strike. I am pretty sure that Lecce and Ford will take advantage of that. Even if CUPE gets what they want they will not be able to increase a Budget that Ford controls. I can see schools having to lay off staff.

Ontario is truly spiraling 🌀 into a mess. Between schools & hospitals it’s chaos

Reprehensible CUPEOntario

can't keep the schools open without CUPE? maybe education workers are essential afterall...

Let the teachers walk. They can stay out for the whole year.

Time to privatize!

IStandWithCUPE -- we won't be doing any online learning. Some of you seem to be confused about WHY they're striking again but I can assure you it's absofuckinglutely for the children. Half of you whining and carrying on probably don't even have kids in the schooling system.

Yep, home school your kids if you can. Time to shut this shit show down, lock them out.

GO TO WORK IdontstandwithCUPE

Education workers are being held Hostage by their union

E N U F. A L R E A D Y. cupestrike Get real.

Nope if the teachers are on strike so are our kids!!! We pay taxes for them to be taught in school

Stop paying the teachers while this strike happens. The will do nothing online... that was proven for the past 2 years. It's just another paid holiday for them

Maybe the portion that goes to public catholic school boards should go to private and I will send them there and pay the difference! Who pays me when they decide to strike nobody so I have to loose money too now!

Looks like my guy has some time off coming up not going through that again. It might be the Ed system Sflecce wants but no thank you

We gonna take in 1.5 million migrants over 4 years. Enjoy your job while you have it. 👍

👍🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

waltonmom is misleading the union and the members. God pay them all

It looks like Walston took acting classes with Justin He will never go again the teacher because he has to face and second maybe we can music out of it Miss Queen and drama queen and I love queen as a band but not a drama class for a kid to learn this year that all folks in 2023

Yes because 5pm on a Sunday is plenty of notice you idiots🙄

I’d fire them all and hire contracted replacement workers , the Dougie way

Check out my page ! Hit me up exocticbackwoods backwoods nostrike

Imagine nurses or doctors did this. Just imagine.

Teachers please do not cross a virtual picket line. I hope teacher unions take a stand against this.

OECTAprez I hope you're working to remove remote learning from the radar completely. We do not want to be told to 'pivot' (and it's not a pivot at all) to remote learning for every snow day, etc. Enough already!

So how many weeks out on strike, with no pay, to zero the 4% raise ?

Bring in contractors

Gotta love CUPE!

Long Xmas vacation at the cottage?

poor babies don't have covid fraud to play hooky

Forget it; Not happening in this house. Get them back to work, where they belong!

👍👏 good job angering 1000s of parents . That's how you get support 😂

the cupe members NEED to fire this wacko walton before the public truly does turn on them.

Ooo...first time I've ever wished for an ice storm 😏

Here we go again unions vs government pandemic.

Nope you guys strike that your issue , not my kids. They’re already spent too much time in front of a computer.

Sooo using the strike or creating the strike as an excuse to go back to remote learning for a few weeks to hopefully help relieve the stress on the hospitals from Covid I mean RSV. Because we can’t lock down and say that the vax didn’t work at stopping Covid got it

My kids will not be doing remote learning. It is for pandemics or severe weather. Not to help unions negotiate.

If I were government I’d close schools nobody gets paid including teachers until there’s a settlement….. 🤝 there would be a deal done immediately! Or take a page of Ronald Reagan’s book what he did with the air traffic controllers! Unions using kids as pawns is despicable!

Took my kids out of the classroom and did online learning for 2.5 years during the pandemic. Now, we finally have them back in school and they’re facing online learning again due to a strike. Tell me again how our government and this system are “for the children”. I call BS.

Bring the students in. They can take time out of the day or stay late with teachers to clean the school and so forth.

monkeyakapata

Ford will have to force his legal hand. It’s going to get ugly now!! Parents will turn against the CUPE especially after Covid lockdowns.

Will there be money for a parent to have to stay home? Single parents will struggle with this.

We need more private schools so we can fire union teachers

Nope. I'm no strike breaker.

Here we go again. CUPE wants its General Strike.

The only real winners in this strike are the actual teachers that will once again get paid to do jack s**t with online learning.

CUPE: We want a raise. Government: Ok here’s your raise. CUPE: We want it in blue. And with cheese. And left handed. Government: OK CUPE: you bastards never give us a single thing.

These people can rot in hell selfish babies

Bring the governments latest deal to the members and I guarantee they will vote to take what was offered

Nah I’m good. My kids will just enjoy their time off while everyone else can duke it out.

CUPE should just cancel their Disney subscriptions. That'll fix all their supposed woes.

The government already gave the union a big wage increase that the union agreed with.... After getting that offer cupe still wants to strike over 'services'!?!?🙄 🙄. Cupe is over playing their hand. You got your raise. Let your members vote on it.

Hacks

“Its about the kids” though 🤡

No

Unions = lowlifes

Why doesn't Stephen Lecce stop all of this and go to arbitration?

My kids have nothing to do with all that money that their union lost on crypto investments last week. Bad move CUPE.

IdontstandwithCUPE credits and charter schools. Now.

Lol go to work

Fck CUPE CUPE is like the schoolyard bully who doesn't like how the game is going. So he picks up his ball and goes home without any thought about how his actions will affect others. That's what bullies (CUPE) do!!! Why not hire kids woking hard in Tim Horton for 16 an hour. Give them 20 an hour. They will happily keep the school open.

Teachers need as much money as possible. They need to buy nice things and have nice things because they teach my non-binary children about white privilege, how to hate Orange man, hate Russia, love Ukraine, love BLM, hormone replacement therapy etc. Thanx for supporting my family How about teachers start working the whole year like the rest of us instead of the 2/3 they do now. I’m a professional with graduate degrees and I get 6 weeks holidays a year. Teachers get double that yet want to be paid as if they don’t. They are out of touch with reality.
