'Don't make a wrong move,' an officer said as he pinned a struggling second-grader to the ground, ultimately for 38 minutes. 'Period.'

There are many more cases of young children arrested in school — cases that don't make headlines, according to a CBS News analysis of the latest data from the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights.

Children with documented disabilities were four times more likely to be arrested at school, according to CBS News' analysis of the 2017-2018 Education Department data. Anyone working with children with disabilities must understand how to respond when a child with an emotional or behavioral disorder acts out, according to Dr. Sonya Mathies-Dinizulu, who teaches psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience at the University of Chicago.

In a 2020 study, Kupchik and his colleagues analyzed interviews with 73 School Resource Officers, or SROs. Nearly all the officers interviewed said their primary mission was to keep the school safe. The difference, Kupchik said, was who those officers felt they needed to protect the school from. SROs who worked with low-income students and students of color"define the threat as students themselves," Kupchik said.

A lawsuit filed on C.B.'s behalf alleges his arrest was part of a pattern: police getting involved for"low-level and disability-related behaviors" that could be handled by teachers or administrators. Gerardi said she couldn't understand why her son was handcuffed face down on the floor. "I have a real hard time understanding that these adults don't have a better solution than to do this," she said."The long-term effects, the trauma of putting a child in a completely powerless situation, even physically over their body and causing them harm based on a behavior is ludicrous to me." "It was a very rude awakening, because when I arrived there and I picked my son up off the floor, he was limp, completely limp," she said."He was just exhausted.

CBS News shared the results of its analysis of the Education Department data with Lhamon. Though she said there could be times in which arresting a 7-year-old is acceptable, she said it should not be the norm. "There's very little that I saw in that video that is acceptable, and there's very little on that video that is consistent with federal civil rights obligations," she said.

'Could' they, now? It's almost like there's several patterns emerging here that would be obvious to anyone with half a brain cell

Abolish police everywhere not just schools.

A second grader… a child of 7 or 8… ACAB is all I have to say, idc

100,000 more cops, right POTUS JoeBiden?

Some people, especially police officers, have a complete lack of common sense and common decency.

The policeman should be arrested and charged with child abuse. 7 years old!

Disgusting.

Oink

SCHOOL TO PRISON PIPELINE MUCH?

'There is no law so obscene that the police would not be willing to enforce it, up to and including the mass execution of innocent children.' - michaelmalice

Disgusting

This is how you get defunded.

Are cops going to Starr shooting 2nd graders now too? Wtf?

This is barbaric.

Cops are the wrong call in these situations. Our systems don't deal with inappropriate behavior in any way other than using force and it's wrong.

What the fuck

This is the sign of a sick society

Wow that child was really safe

Mom was lucky she got her child back alive.

Oink oink

Government run schools are a nightmare.

This is what happens when you put police in schools.

kburton40 ACAB

A second grader is an 8 year old. 38 minutes for an 8yr old. Child abuser!

😭😭😭

Notice how none of these cops have stopped one school shooting? But sure tackle a 2nd grader.

But there will always be bipartisan support for more cops. 🙃

the only good cop is Officer Down

This is fucking dark

God bless the blue🫡

Godamighty this here in North Carolina.

Any cop who needs to pin a second grader shouldn’t be a cop. This can’t be reformed.

There's a name for a man who does that: criminal

AC AB

🤬🤬🤬

Hey CBS, join us

Name the officer. Pinning down a 7 year old?!? He needs to be shamed publicly 😡😡

If they think that’s bad y’all should see children’s residential treatment centers. Being pinned to the ground for 40 minutes is NOTHING.

eshaLegal America ish

What, pray tell, was the SIZE and WEIGHT differential on them, FFS?

Hey did you know that private prisons make a *lot* of money, and that the US Constitution still does not ban prison slavery? The United States has the highest prison population per capita in the world, by a good margin. This is all working-as-intended. And will continue.

If parents patented their kids police wouldn't be needed.

debdrens Teaching that ACAB much younger these days. Most of us didn't learn that until high school or after graduation.

MCBazacoPhD That is straight up child abuse. The officer should be fired for endangering the child.

llarisah Wrong move indeed.

llarisah Wrong move indeed.

Another kid (and the ones who watched) that will rightfully growing up hating and not trusting cops.

How can this be reformed?

Second grader. FFS. DefundThePolice all police.

peckedbythedove Heartbreaking that as a society we can’t see how fucked up this is

Medical personnel are able to restrain those who are a threat to themselves & others without doing this type of restraining. Especially on a 2nd grader, this is absolutely insane & unacceptable on any level.

And the school is still standing?

In MY fucking city, jfc.

brucewilson Beat these police officers. That is not a typo. Beat them with their own equipment, batons, truncheons, etc. Beat them bloody. Make them understand that in no way are they EVER to lay violent hands on a child.

How can you expect them to help anyone if they're so afraid of a second grader they handcuff them?

IwriteOK Cops should not be in schools!!! Our children are not prisoners & deserve better

doc_thoughts TrevonDLogan

newkingofmedia Elementary school kids are in no way in need of police interventions, ever, if they are acting out then something is wrong, it needs to be sorted, the kid can be put in a safe space until other solutions are worked out. Police are not the solution to a kid staff can't deal with.

There is nothing in the report by CBS to suggest that there is single idea for a solution to this problem: not every child belongs in a public school classroom. In general, our public school system does not have the resources to handle kids w/ disabilities.

So... is there a national registration of cops who would harm children? We have a system in place for child molesters, for the safety of our children we need one for cops.

Thank heaven for the militarization of police.

Spitting & throwing rocks at teachers requires a strong response! There’s others in classrooms who might copy behavior. Regardless of Federal regulations, local schools may not have resources to deal with very small % of disruptions, write all laws you want! CNN FoxNews ABC

Thank you for bringing this horrific behavior of an officer to light. Next step is correcting it and holding those responsible accountable.

Protect and serve

The way some of these kids go off, they need to wrap them like cats at the vet's office.

Fuck the blue.

Parts of our society are just broken.

IwriteOK If you are tired of losing money, let's make money together with GloriaIneomon She has accurate and profitable signals during this unstable market for all interested investors and traders. Follow her

IwriteOK Obviously, in such a society, a teacher than can handle second graders without handcuffs must be much more remunerated than the police, who evidently need them.

mssinenomine

pinky_or_brain CHILD ABUSE - period!

acab

Some of the worst human beings I've ever met were cops, and I can absolutely visualize the look of aggrieved surprise on his face when they told him that kneeling on a kid's back did not, in fact, make him a hero.

sjeh07 My 2nd grade classmate got in trouble & had to move his desk in front of the teacher’s desk, the rest of us were arranged in, somewhat of a circle, that kid cried SO HARD, from embarrassment, I remember it NOW, at 53, no reason for police to come at elementary school children

Cops suck at being human while on duty it always seems. This behavior is unacceptable in a 'civilized' society.

IwriteOK five year olds for fuck’s sake

'If you, my friend, are not acquainted with the juvenile justice system, you will be very shortly,' the officer told the child.

IwriteOK A 7 year-old? What adult needs to hurt a 7 year-old in that way? That's abuse. Arrest and place on a list to keep away from children.

IwriteOK As to the anecdote at the start of the article, they say they aren't identifying the child for their protection but is there a particular reason the officer isn't named? Is it because his skull is a mere 7mm thick?

IwriteOK It’s not going to happen, unfortunately, but that piece of shit cop needs to serve a prison sentence

IwriteOK Yeah, I've seen raging kids not understand 'stop' and 'dont' and continue to PTSD their way through anyone around them. It starts at home. itstartsathome

A second grader? afrdiasporanews kengandanation DrMumbiSeraki rolandsmartin rickeysmiley RealDLHughley

Acab

Yeah uh…this has been happening for a long time.

America is a sick country

Only in America.

Why aren’t you identifying the child abuser?

Anyone supporting this is sick. There is absolutely no reason ever for a 7 year old child with special needs to be cuffed, pinned down, and threatened by the police!

Does this happen in China 🇨🇳 ? Or in Russia 🇷🇺 ? Or anywhere..? NO it fuking doesn't happen anywhere except in America🇺🇸. And America & Americans has an audacity to lecture other countries about Human Rights..🤡 (P.S : Also fukk those teachers who call police on children.)

Cops are fascist terrorists, and they should be [REDACTED] on sight. PERIOD.

WTFascism?!

look cops get a bad wrap. will they help kids when a guy with a gun goes and slaughters children? No. But you better believe if a 2nd grader acts up they’ll be there with weapons drawn to protect recess, no doubt! Recess is important!

This. Cannot. Be. Reformed. DefundThePolice

Whut the actual farg?!!

Oooh, tough guy.

Micropenis Energy

“Blacks and disabled students” are paired together in the description during this broadcast… journalism fail or win? 🤦🏼‍♀️

USA is evil

If there was only some kind of revenue source schools could tap into to make sure they could fund personnel to help students and teachers access the help that the students need when they are in distress... 🤔

The child was pinned for 38 minutes and the trauma will last for his lifetime. This is not safety. This is not care. This is not what childhood should include. Particularly from those charged with protecting you.

IrishScots24 This is f*cked up, royally!!!

What kind of a sissy bitch cop would cuff a 2nd grader?

Disgusting

2nd grade 😔

NerdPyle How is this even a thing?

A second grader, are you kidding. What kind of a pussy sits on a second grader for 40 minutes. Anyone else would be arrested for child abuse

abolish the fucking police 23486237894974

Don't no what state your in but her in calif a young sex a fender don't get any charges for rape. No reason. Minor get pass. Now that's so messed up. Who bought the D.A. off . This makes me sick.

classic pig behaviour

Hellhole country

pamelasm Disgusting and sickening

NerdPyle Disgusting. If you’re going to scar schoolchildren for life with PTSD then just bring back hacks, you get over that.

notcapnamerica They’re supposed to be in there to create safety, and instead they are creating a hell of a lot of trauma for individual children who are going to grow up struggling to cope with how a very scary adult with a gun treated them like a subhuman piece of garbage in elementary school.

jbadomics This incident is at the intersection of DomesticTerrorism, PublicCorruption, and OrganizedCrime. America, your cops are criminally corrupt and in league with criminal enterprises and trafficking networks.

This is just appalling that any young child should ever be put in handcuffs or arrested. What kind of people would possibly think this is ok on any level.

You Race Baiters! ....You Make 💩🎃☠️,up!

Not surprising considering how after removing the veil in Uvalde the truth about the quality of American police, but this also proves the callousness and unprofessionalism you experience with many of todays teachers. Especially now that we have millennials teaching our children!

Putting cops in schools, when they don't have a mass shooter, they get bored

In my experience with schools, staff struggles with some of these kids who have behavioral issues. In some cases they are afraid of the students and parents and put all the weight on security guards and cops, who don't train for this, which can result in bad outcomes.

Don't listen to the left, cops are good and only 40% of people stand with them. Google '40% Police' to learn more!!!

Where are the para pros that work with Special Needs & 504 students? They work with certified teachers. They help students process & learn life skills. They should be w/that student not calling police.

If there were more armed teachers and students, then someone could have saved that poor child from that marauding blue thug.

Ok so let’s see, a child w/autism actually a few display outburst at school so think the police don’t just have magical inclinations to just show up they r called by teachers so I BLAME THE LOUSY TEACHERS THEY NEED TO BE FIRED 🤬protectthechildren

This is your local DemonRats school boards districts

The fact that the behavior is so bad makes me think the parents ought to be handcuffed and pinned to the ground.

we have a serious cop problem in 'Murica'

Insidious,cowardly and atrocious !

I don't think people should be held accountable either

Bro what? This almost sounds like a TheOnion article

Abolish the police

The teachers should have defended the seven year old against the police. You have a responsibility to fight against tyranny. They should have kept that child safe by any means necessary.

Then they act so bewildered as to why they aren’t trusted.

Almost a good article bringing to light a danger to children - until it went racist.

IBJIYONGI Nothing has changed in this country with regard to law enforcement, with the exception of their increased budget over the last 100 years.

Horrific

38 min? That kid has one heck of a heart.

All cops are bastards. Period.

Are they mad

Cops are so tough and cool
