If the population of KwaZulu-Natal had been warned a day or two earlier in April that huge floods were coming, half of the more than 350 people who died could still be with their loved ones today, says a disaster studies expert

He was reacting to the news that 17 of the 34 posts in the province’s disaster management centre were vacant.Zikalala disclosed this information in the provincial legislature in response to written questions from the DA’s spokesperson on local government, Martin Meyer.

According to Meyer, the province was still reeling after two consecutive floods earlier this year and, more than six months later, more than 3 000 people were still housed in mass care centres.According to Meyer, it was clear that the staff shortage at the disaster management centre had played a major role in the fact that residents had not been warned in advance of the floods, as well as and the lack of guidance, poor communication and slow response thereafter.

Van Niekerk said disaster management in KwaZulu-Natal had never received the attention it did in the Western Cape. The leaders are well aware of the situation. In 2017, we conducted a survey of the state of disaster management in all local municipalities for the South African Local Government Association. Disaster management is the orphan and, when a disaster occurs, they pretend that there’s a centre.

City_Press Zweli Mkhize for president!

City_Press My concern is that people did not learn from the previous floods and still chose to live in unsafe areas where they are on the flood line.

City_Press If the population of KZN (or anywhere else for that matter) was half of what it is, people wouldn't be living on river banks and sending e-coli to beaches that tourists 'need to monitor'.

City_Press Call a spade a spade Why are they staying in unsafe area

City_Press CyrilRamaphosa PresidencyZA the Dam is breaking, do you want to build an entire new Province if it floods and how much professional indemnity Insurance do you have for all those residents and their belongings?
