‘The fundamental problem with collective bargaining and public-sector unions.’ The notwithstanding clause and education workers, plus other letters to the editor for Nov. 13

: Contributor Rory Gilfillan identifies a significant difference between Canadians who fought in the First and Second World Wars and most of us in the 21st Century: “Very little has been asked of us.” He reminds us of “our obligation to do the hard work of democracy.”

But he then equates that work with a willingness to fight wars. Any war, it seems. But isn’t it true that sometimes the choice notThe American war in Vietnam, for example, has now been widely recognized as a military, political and moral disaster. Yet he recommends that we admiringly remember the “estimated 12,000 Canadians who defied their own government and fought in that war.”
