The Biden administration has stopped accepting new applications for its student debt relief program after a federal judge struck down the policy as illegal on Thursday evening.

“Courts have issued orders blocking our student debt relief program,” the department said in a statement. “As a result, at this time, we are not accepting applications. We are seeking to overturn those orders. The Education Department had already approved some 16 million borrowers for debt relief under the program, as of this week.

The department said that about 26 million borrowers in total had filled out an application for the program or been identified as automatically eligible based on income data already on file with the agency. The status of those application is now uncertain after U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman, a Trump appointee in the Northern District of Texas, declared Biden’s debt relief program “an unconstitutional exercise of Congress’s legislative power.” His ruling on Thursday struck down the program, going further than a previous federal appeals court order that had ordered the Education Department to halt the processing of loan discharges.

Wasn't that one, judge, in one state? If so, what's happening in the other states

What? Biden isn’t God? You knew this as a network and people expected otherwise if sourcing from you. You behaved like political activists and not journalists. Even if he addressed the actual cause of the debts - he still needs the legislature to legislate.

Come on Joe, get it through congress.

I think everybody basically knew this was just a bad check written to get votes for the midterms.

😂😂😂😅🤣🤣🤣

Anyone thinking Dementia Joe had the authority to cancel student debt you were wrong! And Dementia Joe knew it. YOU GOT PLAYED! SUCKER'S!

😂😂😂😂

They can work together to provide relief for banks, corporations and Ukraine but when it comes to the American people, now everyone wanna have a 🍆 swangin contest.

He knew they would all along. It was just a scam to buy votes for the midterms. I mean, who didn't see this coming?

So much for America First.

Republicans were against Biden’s stimulus program, but they all cashed all the checks. Republicans can return all that money and the money Trump gave to the rich, stop oil and gas companies’ price gouging, and end inflation in one day.

Watch how fast any support from the Demo party dries up. Thanks for the votes, suckers!

They should send out letters to the people who've been approved & let them know they've been approved & the only reason that they haven't received forgiveness yet is because the GOP filed a lawsuit & a Trump judge ignored precedent & court rules to illegally stop the program!

Figures. I knew it wasn't going to happen.

Hey old man, fire the secretaries of education and post office.

I disagree with Biden's loan forgiveness program. That doesn't mean I want a Federal judge deciding that he or she disagrees with it, and therefor can be creative in finding 'legal' arguments to shut it down nationwide. Leave policy to elected officials, even bad policy.

Whatever the motivation, the GOP has lost a whole generation of new voters! Enjoy 2024 with your same old grievances and inaction to run on! Gen Z is gone!

He knows this was illegal this was just a tactic to influence voters for the midterms election

Can't tell me there weren't Republicans who were going to apply for relief.

Uh oh 😕

Student debt relief applications pulled from Department of Education websiteBREAKING: The Department of Education removed the application for Biden's student debt relief program from its website. It’s because it was blocked by federal judge in Texas…appointed by Trump; very shocking. I expected nothing from republicans and I'm still disappointed And so close to an election (right after of course).
