The University of Texas' endowment has grown to $42.3 billion — and it can thank oil and natural gas royalties from the more than 2 million acres of land it owns in West Texas for the boost.

Harvard University's endowment, currently valued at a jaw-dropping $50.9 billion, has been the largest among academic institutions for more than 35 years. But the University of Texas is nipping at its heels.

"It's about three times the size of Rhode Island," says Ray Perryman, an economic consultant based in Waco, Texas."It's a very big expanse of land." That income was a ballast during a recent difficult period, when the stock market sank by more than 10%. According to the consulting firm Cambridge Associates, in fiscal year 2022, academic endowments had the lowest median return since fiscal year 2009. In recent years, endowments have been investing heavily in riskier assets, including private equity and venture capital funds, hoping to maximize their returns.

Yes, the University of Texas is invested in stocks and bonds and more complicated financial instruments, like its rivals. But those schools have wound down their investments in natural resources, traditionally seen as an inflation hedge.

Good for them, smart thinking. All this land with plenty of natural gas and oil which the world needs. Why let it sit there and go to waste? California is full of renewable energy, 6 dollar gas, no water and not enough electricity to go around. It's working great! 🤣

Good because the world needs fossil fuels, unless we want to go back to the 1400's

Good for them

And yet tuition always goes up

Then why has tuition increased exponentially since the late ‘80s?

Got all that money and no wins to show for it. Must be why they are so ornery all the time.

Harvard has abandoned its founding principles and morals which will be its decline. Not a decision on fossil fuels, but decisions on woke ideology.

Lol this country is so fucked up. University owned oil. Makes perfect sense

The Texas Permian Basin continues to destroy the climate with its huge METHANE pollution.

The size of the University of Texas' endowment is inversely proportional to the odds of our planet suriving the climate holocaust.

Wether you are for or against fossil fuels neither endowment helps inner city or rural school systems to improve education levels to get to these institutions. Endowments are hedge funds that should be taxed heavily

All that money and they’re still gonna end up 8-4

…BILLION?!?!

Well hell, guess I should've gone there for college.

Disgusting.

tax university endowments.

But loan forgiveness

Smart bitness

How much does it cost to go to school there? Seems like they can float a few people huh?

OR. late A.G. Frohnmayer had deleted all records in L.C. It shows I'd changed my name to Nadia Sindi.Left old name Faika Sindi.Changed letters to Saika Findi! Frohnmayer has trapped me in a criminal record since 1987!

$42,300,000,000.00

Physically destroy the ability of humans to survive on earth - but the endowment grew! Hooray! What a great achievement. Just don't count on the money going to paying living wages to non-tenured faculty and university staff.

They should donate here

What nonsense. And POTATUS is busy trying to subsidize student loans instead of compelling universities to secure them.

And I’m sure they’ve adjusted their tuition accordingly..

That’s enough to make college free for every person in Texas.
