“Lisa Browne’s objection to a focus on faith cancels God and violates the fundamental principles of Canada,” writes former PC Leader Ches Crosbie. “You need to admit error and apologize, drop your far-left agenda and stop the defiant corporate bafflegab.”

ALL ALONG THE CLOCK TOWER People near the MUN student centre walk past the Memorial University clock tower Tuesday afternoon. KEITH GOSSE/THE TELEGRAM - Saltwire NetworkI was born in this province and have been a long-time active participant in the social, economic and political life of this province, as both a lawyer and political office holder.

In my view, the university has made a serious error in discontinuing the observance of the singing of the “Ode to Newfoundland” at convocation. I understand that the main reason for this exercise in political correctness may be objections from residents of Labrador who do not feel “included“ by the words of"The Ode."

I should not have to remind the leadership of an institution of higher learning that the introductory words of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms state that “Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God.” Your objection to a focus on faith cancels God and violates the fundamental principles of Canada.

I understand that the provincial government has accepted your request to change the name of the university to include a reference to Labrador. Surely it would give sympathetic consideration to your request, should you make one, to change the words of"The Ode" in an acceptably inclusive way. You have the in-house talent to make some suggestions for consideration.
