Health experts, teachers and parent advocacy groups are reacting to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s statement on Saturday regarding mask mandates in schools.
“It’s reckless and it’s extremely irresponsible and it’s a dangerous and harmful statement,” said Gosia Gasperowicz, a researcher at the University of Calgary and co-founder of Zero Covid Canada. She said she is worried about the message the statement is sending about the use of masks. On Saturday, the premier said she has directed Justice Minister Tyler Shandro to examine whether an appeal of the decision would be appropriate.

BUT the Court specifically said that Mandates are the responsibility of the Medical Officer of Health. Of course, Smith will appoint a new one who will tow the line. As Dr. Moore has in Ontario, reading the scripts that Ford gave him.

This is awesome. Nobody’s saying that those who want to wear one can’t. Just that mandating it of others is not allowed. Freedom of choice is super neat, I like it. Especially when it comes to personal health.

Incompetent political leadership and politics rather than evidence-based health decisions are detrimental to a lot of things. I believe a court just found it illegal for the cabinet to end a masking mandate since it is supposed to be health officials making those decisions.
