Schools in Haverhill, Mass., to close for 4th day as teacher strike carries on; district and union continue to negotiate.

"Talks broke down again this evening — talks that were supposed to start at 1:00 this afternoon, really didn't get started till after 4:30," Tim Briggs, president of the Haverhill Education Association, said at a press conference.Classes are canceled Thursday in Haverhill, Massachusetts, as union and school officials continue to negotiate an end to the ongoing teacher strike.

Haverhill teachers have been striking since Monday; they've been without a contract since school started and negotiations between them and school district leaders gridlocked. Briggs shared his disappointment with how negotiations fell through Tuesday, claiming the school district reverted to a deal they offered Sunday, essentially erasing any progress and concessions the union said they’ve made.

“We recognize there are limitations but the finances… the city is not in the financial shape they’re claiming,” Briggs said.
