Student loan borrowers applying for relief under the Biden administration’s one-time cancellation plan will need to provide the government with some basic information and an attestation under penalty of perjury that they qualify, officials said Tuesday.
The preview of the form, which isn’t yet live, answers some questions about how the Biden administration plans to implement the debt cancellation plan. The application will ask borrowers for their name, email address, birthday, phone number and Social Security number and to confirm that they’re eligible for the plan. In addition, borrowers will need to certify that the information they provide on the form is true and correct under penalty of perjury.
“In the first instance borrowers are the only available population who can get access to relief, second the vast majority of those borrowers qualify,” a senior administration official said, noting that the government is instituting a “multi-step process” for preventing fraud that’s focused on the 5% of borrowers who aren’t eligible for relief.
Application will be available in October Though officials provided more detail on what borrowers will be required to do to access relief, the form isn’t available yet. Senior administration officials said it will go live in October, but didn’t provide an exact date.
