Interstate 17 northbound was closed at milepost 236 north of New River due to a crash involving four vehicles and three deaths.
Just before 4 a.m. on Oct. 10, a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes collided with vehicles traveling northbound. "The driver, and sole occupant, of the wrong way vehicle was unconscious and transported to a hospital," stated Sgt. Jesus Gastelum of the Arizona Department of Public Safety. "The single occupant drivers of the other two involved vehicles sustained non-life-threatening injuries."The highway reopened at 11:30 a.m. at milepost 236 north of New River. During the investigation, I-17 was blocked at Table Mesa Road.
The students, identified by GCU as 18-year-old Abriauna Hoffman, 19-year-old Hunter Balberdi, and 18-year-old Magdalyn "Maggie" Ogden, were all freshmen and dorm roommates. Two of the three were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third died at the hospital.
