Summaya Mughal, who works for BBC Radio Leicester, says cultural barriers prevented her from learning to swim as a child.
According to Swim England, people from ethnically diverse communities are under-represented in aquatics, with just 3.4% swimming often, compared to 5.5% of people from white communities.
After that, maybe she can teach me.
Well I guess you should be happy at this age for taking that bold step. I do not know anything swimming skills or how to swim at my age cause I am not bothered 😕
Shit lazy parents?
post real bbc news
Its because she can't swim.
A life skill that should be taught in schools
Good for you! Swimming is fun. It’s a bit like meditation… just remember to breathe and stay afloat. 😅
Because we are never too old to learn something new as long as we live we should learn
I was 42 when I learned to swim. Now do so several times a month and wish I’d done it many years earlier.
most likely because you didn't learn sooner......in other news, water is wet and the sky is blue
there’s a joke here somewhere but i’m not allowed to say it on the internet
Yet the same 'cultural barriers' force her to swim with her clothes on. Anyone remember when BBC presenters actually pronounced the words of our great language properly? God save us.
Who cares? I mean really who cares? If there is anyone out there that does then get a life.
Yup global warming, we will need to be aquatic when the ice caps melt. What a silly story in a time of chaos how is this news worthy
🤦♂️
I assume this is a rhetorical question and not the “tweeter” using the site because he or she thinks we might be interested.
Is it because you can’t swim?
Presumably because she couldn’t swim at 26
I was 50
when religious rules/taboos get in the way. you got to be of an age to say yes i can do this and not feel you're compromising your faith, body, image etc. better to learn when very young or when ready, you never know when you need the skills to survive.
I learned to swim at 28. It's never too late.
Good for you 👏
Cos you want everyone to see you in a swimsuit?
SummayaMughal I can’t swim either.
Wild guess, is it because you're 27 and hadn't learned previously?
Who cares
Is it because you can't swim
Her cultural differences helped her through the job interview at the BBC though, didn't it?
Dave drowned So at the funeral we got him a wreath in the shape of a lifebelt. It's what he would have wanted. Nod to GD
Good. I think it's a skill we all need to learn
Because you didn’t learn to swim at 26 🤷♀️
So your less likely to drown?
rising sea levels
These 'lifestyle' articles need to stop
Because you don’t want to drown?
Cost of living crisis, pales into insignificance.
AbolishTheFee
Why is this actual news?
Cultural barriers may translate to her father didn’t want her showing skin to men could be the reason and not to do with swimming is for whites only
Is it for the tsunami that's gonna happen when Russia nuclear torpedoes us
'cultural barriers prevented her from learning to swim as a child'
A fear of Sea level rising?
Meanwhile in real news Russia is waging war against the Ukrainian people.
Who? Will she be on strictly?
Swimming is racist🙄
Is it so that you can swim?
