The community leader operated a small neighborhood grocery store which acted as an after-school stop where she helped students daily.

Dallas ISD has more than a dozen schools named for area Latino leaders. For Hispanic Heritage Month, The Dallas Morning News profiles four schools and their namesakes

“This community was so blessed to have a leader like her — a female Latina that inspired people like me to pursue my dreams and education,” Sanchez-Salas said. “Now, I can pass it on to my daughter. I feel at home, and she is at home here, too” In her community, Esperanza Medrano established a school clothes pantry for children and provided lunch money for students in need. The school now partners with local companies and organizations to offer students resources and experiences.

Cynthia Toran, who teaches math and science, says the location is one of the main reasons she loves the school, where she started 17 years ago. The campus relies heavily on donations from community partners to keep the store stocked with toys and games.“The students get an opportunity to buy something tangible,” Mondragon said. “When they see that their behavior or hard work is recognized, and they’re able to buy something and take it home, it really incentivizes them.”“She had her own store and so do we,” Mondragon said.
