OAKLAND — At least six people were injured in a shooting near a group of East Oakland schools on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said, as sparse details emerged from one of the Bay Area’s worst school shootings in recent memory.
Officers responded to the shooting shortly before 1 p.m. arriving at an Oakland Unified School District building in the 8200 block of Fontaine Street, which houses multiple campuses: Rudsdale Continuation, Newcomer high schools, BayTech Charter School, and the headquarters of Sojourner Truth Independent Study, which has no students at the site.
As students and staff realized there was an active shooter in the area they quickly jumped into lockdown protocol, locking their doors, darkening the lights, and staying quiet. Another 10th-grade student thought the lockdown was “just a drill” until he heard a teacher “crying in fear.”
