TCU hangs on to win Battle for the Iron Skillet in Sonny Dykes’ return to SMU

For the first time since 2018, the Horned Frogs were victorious in the Dallas-Fort Worth rivalry game. The head coach who’d, ironically, had a hand in keeping TCU winless for two straight seasons while in Dallas is happy to see it all come and pass.“To be honest, it was a little embarrassing for me,” Dykes said of the postgame serenade. “But I was more appreciative than I was embarrassed.”, said that “I would boo me, too.

TCU head coach Sonny Dykes stands along the sideline before a game against SMU at Ford Stadium, Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, in University Park. Dykes, of course, wasn’t the only one in purple who wore SMU colors last season. TCU offensive coordinator Garrett Riley served as SMU’s offensive coordinator from 2020-21. Offensive line coach A.J. Ricker held that same role at University Park during that span, too.“They definitely had an advantage,” said SMU defensive end Nelson Paul, who carded three sacks. “Because back then, everybody got together and we knew each other personally and knew exactly how our techniques went down.

Said SMU wide receiver Jake Bailey, who caught eight passes for 163 yards. “It was a fun atmosphere. A lot of people, obviously, bad blood and all that. But it was a good atmosphere and I thought we did well.”
