Maryland would become the first U.S. state to offer a paid service year to every high school graduate under a plan being pushed by Democratic hopeful Wes Moore

The service year option, which would provide job training and mentorship, is designed to prepare young Marylanders for college and careers and to make access to those opportunities equitable and affordable; part of Moore’s broader platform to attack complex systemic problems, such as child poverty and the racial wealth gap, with a focus on providing the same opportunities to people from various backgrounds.Project advocates say it would be the first program of its kind in the country.

Moore, who has not offered a cost estimate and has said he does not plan to raise taxes to fund it, said his program probably would run through a partnership of federal, state, and local governments, along with nonprofit and for-profit companies. An industry expert estimated that a service year option could cost as much as $30,000 per year for each participant, depending on how it is structured.

The vitriol has led to an increase in hate crimes in Maryland and across the country. According to FBI data, hate crimes in Maryland skyrocketed 110.5 percent, from 19 in 2019 to 40 in 2020. The numbers jumped 13.4 percent nationwide. Advocates say service brings people together from different races, cultures and economic statuses for common purpose.

John M. Bridgeland, co-founder and vice chairman of the Service Year Alliance, an initiative to create a national service counterpart to military service in the United States, described Moore, a best-selling author and former chief of one of the country’s largest poverty-fighting organizations, as being “uniquely positioned to advance this idea at a uniquely important moment in history.

How will he pay for it? Will students from all backgrounds be welcome? Wouldn't investing in Vocational-Technical programs in HIGH SCHOOL a better investment?

Looks good on paper but so many High-school graduates can’t read or write. They’ve been passed through the system.

Seems to have learned a similar plan Jamaica's leader pushing democratic socialism did back in the 70's that was highly successful in exposing high school students to a wide variety of career paths, I included and it was a blessing for me.
