CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An unidentified man called Akron police Friday morning and claimed there was someone shooting at Garfield Community Learning Center, a high school.
They were part of calls that went out across the state and nation that authorities deemed as “swatting,” or prank calls made to draw police to what callers say are vast emergencies, according to authorities and the Washington Post. About 11:30 a.m. Friday, Akron police received a call about someone with a gun at Garfield, the school on Brown Street, near North Firestone Boulevard, Akron police Lt. Michael Miller said. The man told police that several students were injured after the supposed shooter walked into a classroom and opened fire, according to the 911 call obtained by“We were unaware of the hoax until police raced into the parking lot,” said Mark Williamson, a spokesman for the school district.
